Sleeping Myths

At times, the best cure for people who are sick would be to get some sleep and rest. Along the way, we are prescribed with various forms of medicine and pills to assist us. Most of the time, the said pills will get us groggy and sleepy, technically categorizing them as sleeping pills with some components to address the illness we are complaining about.

While they are not really tagged as sleeping pills, it would be best to take note of the limitations. They are prescribed to help combat off illness and not serve as sleeping aids for us. Some people have used them at times to address sleeping problems which should not be the case.

They may help make people sleep at times and side effects should be considered. If people are not careful, these may be more controversial than just addressing the sleeping problem they have at the moment.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea, something that has been a bane for most people can only be fully studied and diagnosed using the standard procedure of measuring nasal pressure through sensors placed in the nose. This is entirely uncomfortable and people just have to bear with it to gain the necessary treatment of the said sleep problem.

Today, the use of remote-controlled infrared diagnostic tests provides an alternative and convenient way of diagnosing sleep apnea among sleep deprived patients.

“Polysomnography is a diagnostic test, which establishes the presence or absence of sleep disorders. But standard methods have the potential to significantly disturb a patient’s sleep pattern, so what we see in the lab may not be a true representation of the patient’s sleep habits,” said lead study author Jayasimha Murthy, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, TX. “However, remote infrared imaging is a noncontact method, so there is minimal interference with the patient. In fact, this system can be designed to where the patient isn’t even aware that monitoring is taking place.”

Actelion Pharmaceuticals

It is prevalent that most companies want to make an immediate impact into the drug industry and for Actelion, it doesn’t want to waste time at all.

Focusing dearly on its experimental sleeping drug, Actelion wants to have a partner that will help focus on the sales and the market once it is ready to break into the market.

“Swiss biotech Actelion Ltd (ATLN.VX: Quote, Profile, Research) is looking for a partner to help with the eventual launch of its experimental sleep drug, its chief executive told Reuters on Thursday.

Actelion itself will run late-stage trials for almorexant, due to start this year, but a partner would help ramp up sales faster after launch, CEO Jean-Paul Clozel said in an interview. “
