Circadin Gets Approval for Treatment of Insomnia

Treatment for Insomnia

Neurim Pharmaceuticals has confirmed that Circadin has gained approval for treatment of primary insomnia in patients aged 55 and over. The European Commission has approved a change in treatment from 3 to 13 weeks (or 3 months).

The approval was based primarily on data obtained in the latest SOUNDER-SLEEP Phase IV clinical study, indicating that Circadin was safe and more effective than placebo for at least 3 months. Circadin is now the only sleep medication to be approved for up to 3 months.

Merck Drug Used in Insomnia Studies for Sleep Improvement

Merck & Co. are developing a new drug that is said to help improve sleep and people suffering from insomnia. The drug is called the MK-4305 and belongs to a new class of sleep drugs which inhibit production of orexins in the brain, blocking stimulation of the brain’s arousal system.

Orexin is a neuropeptide that is believed to play a key role in regulation of the brain’s sleep/wake process.

It looks like a new classification for sleep disturbances has been uncovered by the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. Based on their findings, sleep disturbances are associated with “meaningful reductions” in quality of life and is multiplied as per the individual’s race or sleep disorder.

Based on a study conducted by the Shanghai Institution of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Sleep Disorders, about 7 million Chinese suffer from tossing and turning. Additionally, women were found to be suffering 1.5 times more than men.

Somaxon Pharmaceuticals Inc. got approval for its insomnia drug Silenor after three tries from the FDA. The company had initially sent their drug application as early as January, 2008 which eventually got declined. Somaxon resubmitted its application on January 21, 2010, which was considered as Class 1 resubmission with a two-month review cycle resulting in a decision date by March 21, 2010.
