The Abnormal Sleeping Pattern of Babies
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung December 7th, 2007 in How to sleep better, Sleep Apnea.
We often envy new born babies because they can sleep all they want. But the thing is, they are really not left with much options considering they are in the stage of trying to adjust themselves into the world they have been christened into. Given the chance, they would want to do things normally as we all do. But in their infancy ages, irregular sleeping patterns are only normal for the average babies we see today.
A lot of these stem from the fact that the irregularities in sleep are the saving grace for their adjustment towards eating and being awake these days. They are undergoing a transition stage and once they are able to adapt and stabilize to actual living conditions, chances are they will experience the regular sleeping habits that most of us long for today.
(Source) Infants have irregular sleep patterns because of their need to frequently eat. There are some sleep disorders that are learned behavior instead of a legitimate disease. These types of sleep disorders can be overcome without medication by changing the child’s environment and gently teaching them to improve their sleep habits.
As a child gets older, they go through a period of having nightmares. Sleep terrors or night terrors are other forms of sleep disorders. The child usually outgrows these forms of sleep disorders.

Oral Surgery Can Help Resolve Sleep Apnea
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung October 25th, 2007 in How to sleep better, SLEEP News, Sleep Apnea.
Sleep apnea has been known to originate from blocked passages in people and addressing them in the best way that anyone can will surely be a good way to whittle down the possibilities of blocked airways that deprives people of sleeping.
The airways are important once people are sleeping and through some procedures governing the areas of throat and mouth, a cure may be in sight for people who want to address the whole sleep apnea issue.
“Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, is a well-established treatment for sleep apnea,” said lead study author Akram Khan, MD, Assistant Professor, University of Florida Jacksonville, “and while most patients tolerate it well, some are unable to tolerate it or don’t want to, and those patients need alternative means of treatment.”

Using Infrared to Diagnose Sleep Apnea
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung October 19th, 2007 in How to sleep better, SLEEP News, Sleep Apnea, Sleep Cures.
Sleep apnea, something that has been a bane for most people can only be fully studied and diagnosed using the standard procedure of measuring nasal pressure through sensors placed in the nose. This is entirely uncomfortable and people just have to bear with it to gain the necessary treatment of the said sleep problem.
Today, the use of remote-controlled infrared diagnostic tests provides an alternative and convenient way of diagnosing sleep apnea among sleep deprived patients.
“Polysomnography is a diagnostic test, which establishes the presence or absence of sleep disorders. But standard methods have the potential to significantly disturb a patient’s sleep pattern, so what we see in the lab may not be a true representation of the patient’s sleep habits,” said lead study author Jayasimha Murthy, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, TX. “However, remote infrared imaging is a noncontact method, so there is minimal interference with the patient. In fact, this system can be designed to where the patient isn’t even aware that monitoring is taking place.”

The Role of Obesity in Sleep Deprivation
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung October 9th, 2007 in How to sleep better, Insomnia, Sleep Apnea, Sleep Disorders, Sleep Issues.
Many people have always believed that stuffing themselves with food to take the place of usual sleeping habits has been a good way to combat insomnia and known sleep deprivation issues we hear of today. Obesity has been another area for health concerns and surely, there is an association between sleep deprivation and obesity as studies from the National Sleep Foundation have shown.
The whole theory is quite ridiculous. While some people believe in it, it is an unhealthy way of living and making up for lack of sleep which is obviously a need today. Food has its own role in maintaining health and sad to say, it is not a good substitute when it comes to trying to make up for lost sleep.

While some people are hopelessly praying and taking various medications to fight off the sleep apnea bug, there are people who have taken the whole issue to another level. While some are wary of the side effects and the after-effect of undergoing surgery to address this issue, ongoing works being done in institutes such as Aspire Medical in Milwaukee.
Most implants would require general anesthesia to help the procedure push through. But with this new device, it can be carried out using local anesthesia.
