Narcolepsy is in the Genes
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung October 1st, 2008 in Health Issues, How to sleep better, Narcolepsy, SLEEP News, Sleep Disorders.
We see some people who suddenly get sleepy even if they have claimed that they have had a good night’s sleep. While this may be debatable, assuming that his claims are true, one has to wonder why a person would still be sleepy despite a full sleep taken.
But thanks to some researchers in Japan, it has been discovered that Narcolepsy and genes known as singe nucleotide polymorphisms or SNP. SNP is a DNA sequence variation between members of a species.
During the research, researchers discovered a genetically mutated fragment of chromosome 22 which increased subjects’ vulnerability to the disease by 1.8 times. Researchers also discovered that the mutation causes a malfunction of the gene CPT1B, which is linked to sleep. Researchers also found that a link between the genetic mutation and narcolepsy was also found in South Koreans.

Zzoma Device in Place of Masks
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung September 30th, 2008 in How to sleep better, SLEEP Gadgets, SLEEP News, Snoring.
For people who have been using CPAP masks for better sleep, you can be assured that it is something entirely irritating and needed to get used to. To help reduce snoring and sleep apnea problems, CPAP masks are known to help provide better air passage for people who have difficulty breathing while sleeping.
It is likewise advised to sleep sideways so that you can avoid clogging those airways. Zzoma is a device that is worn like a belt on the chest. There is a device that is attached to it that aids in helping people avoid sleeping on their back. Zzoma is a good alternative if you hate using those traditional CPAP masks. Try it out for a change.
“Zzoma is a device which is worn around the chest area like a belt, with a device on the back, which is a firm, foam material wrapped in canvas to keep people from moving on their backs. Over the last year, we’ve been studying its use in treating patients with mild to moderate positional sleep apnea.”

Wake Up to the Glo Pillow
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung September 29th, 2008 in How to sleep better, SLEEP Gadgets, SLEEP News.
Alarm clocks have long been known to serve its purpose, using its irritating bell or chime to wake you up at specified periods that you require. But while that is used through the traditional sense of hearing, perhaps this Glo Pillow can use eyesights and help you get up to the sudden burst of light when you sleep on them.
The features are practically the same. You set the time when you want to get up and the pillow will use its built-in LEDS which brighten gradually over a span of 40 minutes that will pull you away from your deep slumber.
It seems like a more logical solution considering the gradual awakening can gradually wake you up.

Offices Investing in Energy Pods
4 Comments Published by Brian Yalung September 28th, 2008 in SLEEP News, Sleep Business, Sleep Education, Sleep Issues.
We are all familiar with the phrase “No Sleeping on the Job” but apparently some companies are retracting this belief. For the sake of productivity, some companies allow their employees to sleep but not on their table.
Companies are taking on a new lease, investing in these innvovative EnergyPods for taking naps and then return to work refreshed. Of course this may be subject to a lot of issues but knowing companies, they are bound to place some restrictions and guidelines on proper hours to get some short naps and then be more productive for the sake of overall operations.
Vinayak Sudame, an engineer at the Research Triangle Park campus of Cisco, says he uses an EnergyPod to “shut my eyes and shut myself off for 10 or 15 minutes” when he is working on a problem or needs some quiet time. More than a walk or a coffee break, he says, this type of “total mental rest” helps him return to work with what he calls a “reorganized” perspective.

0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung September 27th, 2008 in How to sleep better, SLEEP Celebrity, SLEEP News.
Ashlee Simpson seems to be to engrossed or perhaps gotten used to having stuffed toys by her side these days. Pregnant and expecting her first child soon, Simpson has had a preference for having these stuffed bears around to get good sleep. Can you imagine a bed full of these teddy bears?
We all know that pregnancy is quite a sensitive stage. For one thing, women have certain preferences when it comes to food and sleeping preferences. So as far as why Ashlee Simpson loves these stuffed bears a lot should not really be surprising. To each her own!
Ashlee Simpson can’t sleep without her cuddly toys. The singer, who is expecting her first child with husband Pete Wentz, has received hundreds of stuffed bears since announcing her pregnancy and reportedly can’t bear to be parted from them when she goes to bed.
A source said: “She has so many teddy bears and loves them so much she has filled her bed with them. It is a little crowded, but Pete gives in to whatever Ashlee wants. It is really sweet.”
