We all know how handy blankets are for people, especially the kids when bedtime comes. They are either used as an aid to fend off the colder climates or at times, used for some sort of security or something to hold on to help them go to sleep. Normally, lucky kids would not go through the trouble of asking a blanket from their parents but for the less fortunate, here is a cause that deserves attention. Children anywhere in the world are given a free blanket each time a blanket is bought through Happy Blankie. The cause was founded way back in 2008 by a 7 year old child named David Holdridge in an effort to entice donations for needy kids. The whole thing is not limited to blankets though. It also includes stuffed toys too. All this from a seven year old…Bravo!
When it comes to watching shows, it is a fact that organizers and producers would aim to come up with scripts that will keep the audience attentive. It has become a habit for most audiences to fall asleep when they find themselves watching boring or long shows but it seems that there is one show in London that aims to actually put folks to sleep. “Lullaby” is a show designed to send people to sleep. The show is being held at the Barbican in London where storytelling and singing octopuses are used to put people off to lala land. The audience even get pre-booked beds and are encouraged to attend the event in their pajamas. People watch the show and eventually find themselves falling asleep. They are awoken the next day at around 7:30 a.m. where they are served breakfast. To date, the show has produced more sleepers than people who are awake. An odd way to get some shuteye but classy way to get it. This way, students could probably get up more responsibly to make sure that they won’t be late for class and a way that should start the day right. They will get a more respectable way of being woken up. “Good morning from Marshalltown High School. It’s time to get up and enjoy the day” would be the new alarm announcement that students over at Iowa’s Marshalltown High School will be getting. After this is announced, a message informs students when their first period would start. Innovative, respectful and something that should start a student’s day on a bright note.
With a couple of days left before the Royal Wedding actually takes place, fans of the soon-to-be Royal Couple have started to camp out. These are fans who don’t want to miss a thing once Prince William and Kate Middleton exchange their royal vows, choosing to camp out for the next three nights so that they will not miss this rare opportunity. Sleeping bags and other sleep stuff that can help them be comfy are out in the streets although some are a bit worried about the weather. Some even have chairs just so they will not be boxed out from the said event. While it may seem a bit crazy, camping or sleeping out is nothing new to die-hard fans. There are people who have done it when a new gadget is set to come out so getting the best seats with such a sacrifice is certainly no big deal. The question of being able to sleep properly though seems to be questionable. Bloggers have been known to forego sleep to be more productive or for some, invest in social media activities. Add on the time spent tweeting, updating Facebook, or checking into Four Square and the average blogger has very little time left for themselves. Backed by the makers of the Sound Asleep Comfort Pillow, bloggers are the perfect individuals to lead the cause. The National Sleep Awareness Week runs from March 7 to 13 an event designed to help spread the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. Oh and before anything else, you don’t have to be a blogger to join this special sleep event.
There are various ways where people can make a statement for a cause and here is something interesting where two brothers sleep out in an igloo to raise funds for a children’s charity. The igloo was made by them, using small pints of snow the size of a loaf which gradually increased to the size of actual blocks. The igloo stands 8 feet tall and was built by Ciaran and Adam Moss. Over the four days of building the igloo, the family became aware of the Saoirse foundation, a charity founded to help brother and sister Saoirse and Liam Heffernan from Castlemaine, Co Kerry, who suffer from the rare Batten disease. The brothers were provided with plenty of sleeping bags to help them through the cold and all donations were going to the Bee for Battens – Saoirse Foundation charity. A 62 year old unemployed security worker named Pedro Soria Lopez took the title and went home $1,400 richer after showing off a 17 minute snooze highlighted by decibel snores. There were over 360 contestants organized into groups of five and were given 20 minutes to lie down on couches and sleep for as long as they can. Each contestant was timed by a doctor with a pulse-measuring device to determine how long they spent snoozing. Meanwhile, a judge awarded points for snoring, odd sleeping positions and striking pajamas. The initiative comes from the Sleep Experts of Dallas, sharing the gift of sleep to families in North Texas by donating more than 50 mattress sets to the Central Dallas Ministries with the hopes of fighting poverty. Through Sleep Experts’ Rest Assured mattress donation program, every customer’s old bed is recycled and donated to charity. Upon delivery of a customer’s new bed, the old mattress is removed and completely refurbished and then donated to local nonprofit organizations serving families and children who are victims of abuse, homelessness, poverty or illness. To date Sleep Experts has provided more than 7,000 beds to the Dallas/Fort Worth community and donated over $500,000 in recycled mattresses, resulting in more than a million nights of sleep for thousands of families in need. And while the whole intent may be good, this is perhaps the first time you would hear of such an event, something that employers find useless. 75% of Britons suffer from lack of sleep while others do not sleep more than 6 hours daily. The ads are reminders for the elders that proper attention and care should be done for their children. This includes telling parents that babies should sleep in their own crib or bed with no pillows. Apparently this has to do something with SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. SIDS is nothing new. It is a dreaded issue that parents have to deal with as far as sleeping alongside their children. However, with the proper precautionary measures, parents may yet understand the proper directives to make sure that they are safeguarding their child as well. Like this one from New York, The Benjamin Hotel is offering a new Art of Sleep Package which starts at $289 a night. This includes consultation, with the hotel’s sleep concierge, a bedtime snack of peanut-butter-and-jelly finger sandwiches; 20 per cent off a sleep-inducing spa treatment at the hotel spa and a 2 p.m. checkout. Not a bad package to check out, especially if you are among the sleep deprived people today.
Are you against co-sleeping? Well if you are and you happen to be in Milwaukee, join their scheduled campaign against co-sleeping. This is a call for parents to avoid sleeping with their babies who may end up suffocating to death as the case was for this 6-week old baby girl who died while sharing the bed with her mother. The mom found her baby dead when she woke up. This is perhaps any parent’s fear or worst nightmare. At such young stages, babies should indeed be left to their own bed or crib with no blankets, toys or pillows. They should be laid on their backs so that they are face up to avoid suffocation hazards.
An annual event to help the homeless is going to be a bit challenging this year as Oxford announces their annual sleep out campaign led by Lord Mayor Mary Clarkson. The challenge this year is the weather conditions. Unlike in previous years, people may find sleeping out a bit different, having to combat cold weather while doing it all for a cause. However there is an alternative for the cause. People can donate £20 even if they do not take part in the sleep-out and Mrs Clarkson added: “It seems a bit of a cheek to just pay £20 to sleep in your own bed, but every little bit helps this good cause. To donate to the Oxford Sleep-out, send your cheques to The Oxford Sleep Out, c/o The Oxford Night Shelter, PO Box 177, Luther Street, Oxford, OX1 1SF.
Parasomnia involved abnormalities as far as weird movements and behaviors are concerned. But as far as the known abnormalities today, it looks like the subconscious mind of people who think they are asleep are not fully snoozing. Some may even find themselves sleep e-mailing, a routine we normally do at work or when we are totally awake. Seton Hall University researchers document the case of a 44-year-old woman who struggled with severe insomnia for years before she was prescribed the popular sleeping aid, zolpidem (also known by the brand name Ambien), in 2004. Much of this has been said to be because of stress where people bring the office pressures to their sleep. It can happen and while we think we are in the real world, you may just find yourself wondering why you are getting tons of email replies when in fact you don’t recall sending out anything while you are awake. Add sleep-emailing to the list of new sleep disorders known today folks!
It seems that more people these days are trying to reach out and get everyone aware that not all of us have the luxury to sleep in cozy beds or homes. In fact, a large number of people in most states today often wander out into the streets and look for sane places to rest and sleep. Some have made do with abandoned buildings or even the standard alleys. But the fact of the matter is, these are no places for a person to sleep in. So we have another sponsor to raise this awareness. While there was already a previous post for a call to address the sleepless and the homeless here is another effort being pushed by “The Singing Machine”, which has proudly announced that it is sponsoring the Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Center “Great Fall Sleep-A-Thon.” “The Singing Machine has some of the most wonderful people working there and they are also working very hard to help our organization” commented Nina Corbe, Community Development Associate at the Broward Outreach Center in Pompano. “We are so grateful for their involvement.” (Source) Market Watch a broward outreach center, cozy beds, homeless, miami rescue mission, nina, singing machine, … Continue reading →
a

It seems that more people these days are trying to reach out and get everyone aware that not all of us have the luxury to sleep in cozy beds or homes. In fact, a large number of people in most states today often wander out into the streets and look for sane places to rest and sleep. Some have made do with abandoned buildings or even the standard alleys. But the fact of the matter is, these are no places for a person to sleep in.

So we have another sponsor to raise this awareness. While there was already a previous post for a call to address the sleepless and the homeless here is another effort being pushed by “The Singing Machine”, which has proudly announced that it is sponsoring the Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Center “Great Fall Sleep-A-Thon.”

“The Singing Machine has some of the most wonderful people working there and they are also working very hard to help our organization” commented Nina Corbe, Community Development Associate at the Broward Outreach Center in Pompano. “We are so grateful for their involvement.”

For the fortunate people like us, we do not have the luxury of understanding such inconvenience. But this cause being made via the Fourth Annual Siouxland Sleep-Out at the Lewis and Clark Park on November 7 should help give us an idea of just how the people without homes manage to sleep despite such outdoor conditions. There are around 21,000 homeless people in Iowa, according to Wood, and about 600 of them live in Siouxland. He said he expects those numbers to continue to grow due to flooding in eastern Iowa and the staggering economy. “Poverty is the basic reason for homelessness, and certainly the poverty level increases as a result of the economy,” he said. “There’s got to be some trickle-down effect for that.” (Source) Sioux City Journal a benefit, economy, homeless people, homelessness, How to sleep better, inconvenience, lewis and clark park, poverty level, proper sleeping habits, sleep, Sleep Events, Sleep Issues, SLEEP News, strange places
a

While you long to have that special someone to sleep with, once proper sleeping positions or habits may not always be easy to understand.
Sleep is basic and one of the easiest things that people may know to do. But even as it seems to be as simple, sleep issues such as sleep apnea and insomnia have so far made people take on sleep on another angle, considering it a serious problem once you notice that sleeping the normal way has been differing as you live your life. The last thing any person would want is to get help with regards to sleep. In fact, when you are told to attend a sleep seminar, you may end up rolling in laughter. Being taught how to sleep may affect some egos and make people ignore it. But seriously, for specialist such as Robert de Stefano who holds workshops entitled “The Sweet Art of Sleep Seduction”, sleep deprived and insomniacs can learn a lot. The goal of this workshop is to help people and not ridicule them. All it takes is a couple of hours of listening to fully understand what they are up against and what health risks may be involved. “One of the pillars of what I’m teaching is the concept of being able to transition out of your day body and mind into … Continue reading →
a

The last thing any person would want is to get help with regards to sleep. In fact, when you are told to attend a sleep seminar, you may end up rolling in laughter. Being taught how to sleep may affect some egos and make people ignore it. But seriously, for specialist such as Robert de Stefano who holds workshops entitled “The Sweet Art of Sleep Seduction”, sleep deprived and insomniacs can learn a lot. The goal of this workshop is to help people and not ridicule them. All it takes is a couple of hours of listening to fully understand what they are up against and what health risks may be involved.

“One of the pillars of what I’m teaching is the concept of being able to transition out of your day body and mind into a body and mind more positively prepared for a night of deep sleep,” he says. “We’re throwing ourselves into bed and hoping that we’ll relax and get to sleep.”

“The strongest propaganda that insomnia has going for it is that a lot of people think it’s a disease or an illness,” says de Stefano, 52. “Our answer has been to take a pill, but you can’t force or will sleep; you have to lure it. As the title (of the workshop) goes, you seduce it.”

The Big Sleep Show is a first of its kind, aimed at helping the sleep deprived people we have today and perhaps show them ways of remedying their sleeping problems. There are a lot of people who have inherited this dreaded sleeping problem and apparently most of them will be trooping down to Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. which hosts a wide array of gadgets and mattresses that can really be a big help for people who want to get the proper sleep due to them. The show, which organizers say is one of the first of its kind, is the latest sign of a booming, multibillion-dollar industry geared toward the 70 million Americans believed to suffer from sleep problems. Though scientists say it’s not clear whether people’s sleep has grown worse in recent years, it has by some accounts become scarcer: A survey by the federal government found that compared with 1985, more people today get by on six hours or less. The average adult needs seven to nine. It is not merely being able to sleep at the right amounts but also making sure we do not oversleep since it has dire consequences affecting our human anatomy. Such has been proven by the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to which an estimated 50 to 70 billion people suffer from sleep-related problems. Besides having trouble at work, health experts warn that chronic sleep loss is often linked with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disease, depression, cigarette smoking, and excessive drinking. The National Sleep Foundation, a Washington-based organization that studies sleep and sleep disorders, sustains that adults should sleep at least seven hours a night, children ages 5 to 12 should get 9 to 11 hours, while adolescents need 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 hours.
As far as sleep issues are concerned, there is no better time to schedule Sleep Awareness month than in the month of May. To most people, sleep issues are minor, but if you think about it, sleep disorders can become a problem if and when you don’t put it in check. A lot of people can attest to this fact. Sleep, normally seen as something that can be remedied with the right resources including own will power, has become serious and a threat to a person’s overall risk. Insomnia is becoming serious and has even gone as far as affecting the various human body parts to which people are slowly becoming concerned. With that in mind, the move to improve on sleep awareness has to start. May has become the month to make it all happen. If you’re having trouble falling asleep lately, you’re not alone, thousands of Americans survive the day on very little sleep. But that can be unhealthy and even dangerous. For a lot of people sleep remains at the bottom of the priority list, but a local sleep doctor tells me that can limit your productivity at work and if you’re like me, you’ll be happy … Continue reading →
a

Normally, our kids would ask if their friends can spend the night at your place and chances are you will most likely agree to it. But this is applicable only if they are of the same sex. As far as co-ed sleepovers are concerned, parents would most likely say no to avoid certain problems we all know like pre-marital sex etc. But co-ed sleepovers are now becoming a trend. This is most especially true for people who find themselves in the Eastern Cape. SOME Eastern Cape parents are having sleepless nights over what their children might be doing when sleeping over at a friend‘s house, because of a new trend: the “co-ed sleep-over”. And their fears may be well-founded – one expert says there is evidence that some teen co-ed sleep- overs turn into full-blown orgies. So if you cannot find proper cure from medication and therapy, why not make your break a sleep retreat session to get to the bottom of this problem.
