Snoring and Obesity

As far as overall physical appearance is concerned, who would ever think that this could be traced as another key indicator towards sleep related problems such as snoring, sleep apnea and excessive sleepiness? Apparently this was proven in a study at University of Virginia where it was found that children with larger necks should have clinical evaluation to be able to determine if sleep-related issues will exist.

Age-adjusted neck size correlated with body-mass index (BMI) and weight and showed a higher correlation with AHI than did BMI, weight or tonsil size. Neck size also showed a strong inverse correlation with mean oxygen saturation and was a better predictor of mean oxygen saturation than BMI, weight or tonsil size, the study found.

“Children with bigger neck sizes for age should be queried about snoring, apnea, excessive sleepiness, and hyperactivity. Neck size should be considered in the clinical evaluation of children with a history of snoring and apnea,” study author Dr. Pearl L. Yu said in a prepared statement.

Snoring and breathing problems will normally originate from the neck and throat and seeing larger necks does seem abnormal physically and this is only one of the potential complications for health reason that has been found. For sure, there are far more other serious issues related to it such as obesity. See your doctor now and just play safe to be sure for your own sake.

Snore Guard

While you are sleeping, the most embarrassing thought is to be told that you snore while you are in slumber. People including your partner can tell you that and for sure this will get you red in the face. To some, it may not seem obvious but you just never know when you sleep.

When you snore in your sleep, it means that there is something wrong. Your normal breathing periods are being obstructed and chances are your health is the one in danger. So the next time you are told that you do snore, rather than get embarrassed try to see a specialist. It could lead to something very serious than being humiliated.

Snoring mysteriously tends to increase in post-menopausal women, perhaps due to weight gain, Dort says. However, because it often goes hand in hand with sleep apnea, it’s important to see a doctor.

“There are heart consequences related to sleep apnea, including hypertension and diabetes,” she says.

Snoring has more to do with placement of the tongue than with the soft palate and even though men and women have similar physiology, women respond better to snoring appliances than men.

“Up to 55 per cent of women respond to tongue retainers, which are not yet available over the counter,” says Dort, who offers the device, which resembles a baby soother, for $99.

Sleep and Green Tea

Green tea, long known to be a savior as far as addressing the health issues concerning most people today, has been proven to help sleep apnea victims resolve their problems. Apparently, one of its components called polyphenol is the answer to which help most sleep deprived people today.

Green tea has been known to already help people with heart diseases and high cholesterol levels but apparently polyphenol can help address the issue of most people when it comes to breathing pauses which sometimes haunt people while they are asleep.

According to lead study author David Gozal of the University of Louisville, the drop in oxygen levels and inflammation associated with apnea can lead to the death of brain cells over time. He said the study showed that drinking six to 10 cups of green tea a day can help combat this decline.

Gozal stressed that the study suggests green tea should be an “adjunct” therapy in humans suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, not a main treatment.

“If you have sleep apnea, use your (breathing) machine while you are sleeping,” Gozal wrote in an e-mail. “However, if you also drink green tea, this may help you feel better.”
