Every now and then, people who may have experienced something bad or perhaps are in a bad mood would be normally told to sleep on it. But according to a study, it seems that such situations do have certain degrees. When an experience becomes truly tragic or traumatic, it is best to try and stay awake for the time being since sleeping on it may lock bad memories and in general, be emotionally harmful. The folks over at the University of Massachusetts did such an experiment on 100 healthy adults. They were shown unsettling images and scenes initially which they rated. After about 12 hours, they them again, with about half of the group sleeping during the break while the other half did not. The who stayed awake for 12 hours had a weaker emotional response to the unsettling images the second time around, suggesting sleep serves to preserve and even amplify negative emotions. Their memories were also weaker than those of their well-rested counterparts, as they struggled to remember whether they had seen the images before. Made for the big fans of the caped crusader, the Batman Comfy Throw Blanket with Sleeves should be a spunky way to get yourself to get all spoiled and comfortable. This blanket is however made only for adults although I wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple of kids still wanting to try it on for size. Either way, it does offer a deceiving stance although deep inside you are really tugged up and waiting for the right moment to doze off. The Batman Comfy Throw Blanket with sleeves is available from Amazon.com for just $27 in case you want one.
One would think that with the growing problem of co-sleeping with infants, adults and parents would be more careful and take it more sensibly. But with new reports of co-sleeping casualties for November, this doesn’t seem to be the case. There were two separate incidents reported. One had to do with Yasmine Y. Ashley, a 1.5 month infant who turned unresponsive after sleeping alongside her mother and the mom’s said boyfriend. According to the Medical Examiner’s Office report, “the deceased was placed on her back, next to her mother, fed and fell asleep, in the full sized bed.

When her mother’s boyfriend came to bed at 2:00 a.m., the deceased appeared to be ‘OK.’ ”

The other had to do with a certain Demirrion L. Washington, 2.5 months old who died when she was sleeping alongside her mother and sister. The mom went for a shower and when she came back, she felt Demirrion’s cold skin.

While both parties tried to seek help, everything was apparently too late. These are just some of the case reported for November which many of you mothers out there may want to seriously consider.

It is understandable that many parents want to have their babies by their side but be wary of the risks since in these cases, it is apparent that it is a matter of life and death.

While we have the usual post-its or messages which we can leave by the door or the refrigerator, here is one that you can put (or use) as your bed’s backboard. The Reclaimed Wood & Chalkboard Headboard is something from Heather Poitras and Aaron Antanavica, something you can place by your bed’s headboard to leave messages to the sleepy head on the bed when needed. The board is surrounded by a beautiful wooden frame that brings a wonderful rustic charm that really ties everything together. Whether it’s for children or adults, this is something useful to make sure that all messages are relayed when needed without disturbing the sleeping recipient for whom the message is intended for. The Countdown Clock was made to count down to certain events that are important to you, something perhaps like the coming holidays. With about 91 days and counting, the Countdown Clock should be great for kids or even people counting the days where the festive season of the year will finally be here. It features an LCD display and can conversely count upwards as well, perhaps useful for kids on when their next vacation will be or for adults on when they would get their next pay. Whichever way you look at it, the Glo Nighlights offer a futuristic-looking illumination that will be useful in any home. Though it does look like something that comes from an alien planet, their functionality in times of need without having to open those brighter lights and ruin your sleepy daze is something that will certainly be advantageous on your end. If you recall, pillows or cushions have been found to be dangerous for babies who sleep. Issues such as SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) or accidental suffocation therein have become key problems which make them hazards for babies. Having pillows and cushions do indeed make sleeping comfortable for babies, in the same way that we adults find comfort in them. However, as far as babies are concerned, doctors recommend the use of “firm sleep surfaces” which really means a bed with a sheet that is put over the pillows and tucked tightly. This is another study you may have come across, so just consider it a reminder that whatever we think that is comfortable may not necessarily be hold true all the time.
Narrating bedtime stories for kids and maybe even some adults is a great way to put them to sleep and on that note, here are some geeky bedtime books you can check out. They are the Goodnight Dune bedtime books, written and released by Julia Yu.
Here is something that should fit in well in the kids room. If your kids aren’t fine with the standard alarm clocks we have to date, then a virtual time teller might do the trick. And rather than get an alarm clock that only wakes them up, the Zazoo Photo Clock can even lull your toddlers for you. The Zazoo Photo Clock is a visual time-teller that teaches young kids through images when it’s time to get up. When the night falls, a starry night image sets the mood for sleeping; when it’s time to get out of bed, the sunny day scene appears. The Zazoo Photo Clock also comes with other features that include a calendar, rotating digital photo frame and even an MP3 player. A great device for kids and who knows, maybe adults would want it too.
For the kids who find themselves suffering from cough and colds, an old time practice of using vapor rub is still the best solution. The ancient practice has been used to soothe kids (and even adults) who had coughs and colds which help them in their respiratory problems and thus affecting their sleep. And with the support of the folks over at the Penn State College of Medicine, it looks like vapor rub application is still the best way to go. Vapor rubs, containing menthol, camphor and eucalyptus oils, have been used for over a century without published evidence to support their use. The most common side effect cited with the use of the vapor rub was a burning sensation of the skin which seems to be natural. And with the cold seasons coming, there is no doubt you better get hold of these vapor rubs just in case. Such is a concern which has been called upon by Australian governments into making sure that parents are discouraged from using sleep aids. In fact, 12 deaths have been already reported in the last 13 years. Sleep aids are marketed as a solution to supposedly aids parents in handling their baby problems. The most common type looks like a cushioned mat, with padding to lift the baby’s head, and bolsters to stop the baby from rolling onto its stomach. If you believe the pitch, they can stop the baby from succumbing to sudden infant death syndrome, help with digestion to ease colic or gastroesophageal reflux disease – and even prevent flat head syndrome. Until baby sleep-aids are regulated for safety, parents are better off sticking to the basics when it comes to babies bedtime.
While many may have heard that Stage 4 Sleep is a clear indicator of violent sleep walking, it seems that a study proved otherwise. This was presented at the 135th Annual Meeting of the American Neurological Association (ANA). Low levels of stage 4 sleep can be seen in nearly half of nonviolent sleepwalkers and most violent sleepwalkers. Sleepwalking is a fairly common arousal parasomnia that affects up to 4% of adults. Sleepwalking includes a spectrum of behavioral manifestations of different degrees of complexity that usually arise from incomplete awakenings, most often from slow-wave sleep. The more violent sleep-related behaviors, such as attempting to strangle a bedmate or attacking inanimate objects, has attracted growing attention because of potential medical, legal, and forensic implications.
Babies normally sleep a lot and perhaps one thing that we would be surprised at is their ability to learn about the things around them. While this development stage is seen more to be common when they are awake, it seems that newborn babies can learn more while asleep between 16 to 18 hours a day. A new research shows that babies are into the learning process while supposedly sleeping. This was discovered by Dana Byrd, member of the research team that conducted the study that appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Newborn infants’ sleep patterns are quite different than those of older children or adults in that they show more active sleep where heart and breathing rates are very changeable,” she said. “It may be this sleep state is more amenable to experiencing the world in a way that facilitates learning.” Read a adults, breathing rates, dana, development stage, heart, infants sleep, newborn babies, newborn infants, proceedings of the national academy, proceedings of the national academy of sciences, Sleep Education, SLEEP News, sleep patterns
a

This sleepwalking problem has been plaguing the family for 2 years and Jess has been living a practical double life. During the day she is like any jolly little girl but at night she goes into a trance acting out elaborate scenes and is unable or unwilling to communicate. No one knows if she’s awake or asleep. And while these things may seem fascinating, her health is at risk. Sleep is still essential for brain development and of course her young age. However it seems that this is not the true case of where insomnia originates. In fact a 4 year old girl has been discovered to be suffering from insomnia in Britain, often awake by midnight despite a structured bedtime routine. And while many would say that parents or specialists could teach their kids how to practice sleeping patterns but apparently the case is a lot serious than that. Doctors discovered the reason for Jess Tinsley’s problem. It was all tied up to acting out her dreams, a lot of what she has done for the day. This ability to conjure up accurate mental images is known as eidetic imagery. It generally only affects children, as they tend to grow out of it. So technically, some psychological factor was associated with it which the Tinsley’s acted upon. Sleep is important particularly for Jess’ age of four. And the solution? The psychologist suggested that rather than having her bedtime story in the sitting room, she would have it in … Continue reading →
a

One thing that can make people sleepy or easily irritated would be the presence of eye bags which can be the result of a late night, too little water or the natural aging process. Now as far as adults are concerned, it can be a drag especially if you want to avoid wanting to sleep practically all the time because of the heaviness that they bring. One good thing to do is find ways to try and remedy them. Some have used vegetables like cucumber but tea can be a good cure as well. Drinking tea is one thing but after doing so, do not throw away the tea bags as you can actually apply them and place them on the area for curing. If you don’t want to use these tea bags immediately, just store them in your ref and take them out when you have time to relax. Lay back at the most comfortable position possible, place the tea bags on the eyes with the puffy bags for 5 to 20 minutes or longer and you will notice the impact that they can bring in getting rid of those puffy eye bags you hate. a adults, cucumber, eye-bags, … Continue reading →
a

Sore backs or muscle strains that include stiff necks are normally the case but for babies, it is equally relevant. And in their case, it is more of their blood pressure that is concerned as circulatory failures which can go as far as leading to SIDS may occur. “Infant BP is modified by sleep state and sleeping position,” the study authors write. “A tendency for BP to fall in the prone position appears to be prevented by elevated HR at 2–4 weeks and 5–6 months, but not at 2–3 months, coincident with the age of greatest risk for SIDS. An uncompensated fall in BP in the prone position at this age could increase the possibility of circulatory failure and SIDS in vulnerable infants.” (Source) Medscape a adults, babies, blood pressure, circulatory failure, Health Issues, muscle strains, position issues, prone position, sids, sleep, Sleep Disorders, Sleep Issues, SLEEP News, sore backs, stiff necks
a

“Infant BP is modified by sleep state and sleeping position,” the study authors write. “A tendency for BP to fall in the prone position appears to be prevented by elevated HR at 2–4 weeks and 5–6 months, but not at 2–3 months, coincident with the age of greatest risk for SIDS. An uncompensated fall in BP in the prone position at this age could increase the possibility of circulatory failure and SIDS in vulnerable infants.”

Many call it ingenious to help adults and kids avoid the rush when they wake up in the morning to go to work or school. Sleeping in your clothes for the next day may be applicable to kids but surely not for the adults. Unless you are allowed to wear rugged attire when you work, chances are this practice should be left to the kids. Sleeping is hard and waking up on time is another. Waking up early is attributed to the fact that kids have to take showers, brush their teeth, dress up and eat their breakfast before they can be on their way to school. For kids that take out the dressing part, it would be wise to make sure they don’t smell once they are ready to go to school. Baths before bed are good but seriously, waking up early is a discipline one can instill if they go to sleep early. Hard as it may, it seems more practical especially when you talk about proper grooming and then getting ready for the school bus to arrive. However, we only know it to be applicable to the adults today as many sleep deprived individuals need these masks to assist them in sleeping better. But a infant sleeping mask? It is either for serious baby cases or perhaps something like a toy for them to wear when they sleep. By its concept, here is what the makers of this Downtime Organic Sleepytime Mask wants to accomplish: “Nurturing. Children learn that closing their eyes is one step in falling asleep. Expressive. The closed eyelashes that detail the flip-down mask let others know not to disturb baby’s sleep. “ Point taken but would babies even bother to wear them? Wouldn’t it be uncomfortable? We all know that infants are not fond of being irritated or compromised when they are sleeping. Perhaps the makers were just concerned with putting something in the market. For sure, this is something that does not make sense at all. It is indeed something that may not be thought of but hearing or seeing your child breathing abnormally may lead a person to think that there is really something wrong with the child. Tonsils would normally be identified as a culprit towards being an obstruction towards air passage in most people today. While it may be surprising to note on most kids today, the reality is that sleep apnea does not choose or have preference on which it victimizes.
Snoring kids are 3 times more likely to wet their beds so watch out if your kid snores. Make sure he or she gets enough rest so chance of snoring are decreased. Bedwetting and snoring have been linked in both adults and children, Dr. Emmanouel I. Alexopoulos of Larissa University Hospital and colleagues note in their report Treating the cause of snoring — for example, by removing the adenoids and tonsils, can also stop bedwetting. To clarify the relationship between snoring and bedwetting, the researchers evaluated 1,821 children between the ages of 5 to 14 years old, 2.4 percent of whom had a history of bedwetting. Those who snored more than three times a week, 7.4 percent of the total, were classified as habitual snorers. via msnbc picture via fotosearch a 14_years_old, adenoids, adults, beds, fotosearch, habitual_snorers, How to sleep better, larissa, msnbc, relationship, SLEEP News, SLEEP News, Sleep Psychology, Sleep Psychology, sleep-better, stop_bedwetting, tonsils
a
