A study has revealed that sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) or more popularly known as sleep apnoea carries an increased risk of cancer mortality. The study comes from the UW School of Medicine and Public Health where lead author Dr. F. Javier Neto showed a nearly five times higher incidence of cancer deaths in patients with severe SDB. The participants underwent overnight sleep studies that include polysomnography – an all-night recording of sleep and breathing – and many other tests at four-year intervals. The studies are conducted in a specially designed unit at the federally funded UW Institute for Clinical and Transitional Research Center (ICTR). After adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, and smoking, his study found that both all-cause and cancer mortality were associated with the presence and severity of SDB in a dose-response fashion. People with severe SDB died of cancer at a rate 4.8 times higher than people with no sleep breathing problems. The study will be presented at the American Thoracic Society 2012 International Conference in San Francisco.
Obesity and sleep deprivation issues are already health risks on their own and when you combine both, it may lead to a serious death risk. Sleeping pills have their share of issues and as per findings by a family physician and epidemiologist from the Jackson Hole Centre for Preventive Medicine, obese persons may want to beware. It seems that people suffering from obesity are seen as vulnerable and such would be catastrophic for people taking sleeping pills. Pills were found to be tied with longer pauses in breathing and from there you can see how the mortality rate may eventually set in, with reference to breathing problems for the people having their share of obesity problems. These findings are based on the Scripps Clinic-led study of almost 40,000 patients, according to a Scripps Clinic statement. The system aims to remove allergen particles from the air while making use of a certain technology called TLA (temperature-controlled laminar airflow). This creates a downward flow filtered airzone, promising to help out sleepers from contracting the said allergens.
Sleeping disorders among kids seems to be rampantly growing and while parents exhaust all means by scolding them or even resorting to tactics like warm milk or implementing a strict monitoring to regulate their sleep patterns, parents may want to consider counseling as well. This was of course a result of a study that was conducted, which went as far as improving the academics of kids all thanks to better sleep. Parents may be too proud to seek professional help but sleep-related problems among kids is now pretty much common. Quach and his colleagues surveyed about 1,500 parents of kids starting at 22 different elementary schools in Melbourne. Of these parents, 161 said their child had a moderate or severe sleeping problem and 108 were recruited for the study. Kids with more serious sleep-related breathing problems, for instance, were excluded. This and of course some of the distractions like games or even gadgets could spell a big difference as far as helping kids sleep better. Also, it could help them lead healthier lives and perform better in school.

How dangerous is snoring? Better yet, how do you classify your snoring? Technically it is impossible to distinguish snoring types but a study from the University of Chicago revealed that you can do so through urine testing. Researchers analyzed 90 children who had been referred to a clinic to be evaluated for experiencing breathing problems while sleeping, and 30 controls, and it was then discovered that children who had been diagnosed with dangerous snoring showed an increase in a number of proteins in their urine. All the children went through standard overnight tests and some were then diagnosed as suffering from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The research team has stressed that while these findings need to be repeated, these could lead to development of a simple enough test.
If you are constantly using a car seat or carriage to aid your child, be wary. Normally they are used to cradle a child to sleep and make sure that they are secure when mobile in vehicles but if this study is any indication, these baby car seats may pose some health issues concerning the breathing of your child. Many parents think of car seats as a cozy spot for kids to sleep, even outside of the car, because they’re so easy to use. However, these seats, which require infants to be placed in an upright position, can also cause breathing problems when babies sleep in them, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics. The seats can compress the chest wall and reduce airway size, which could result in lower oxygen levels in the blood, the researchers found. So they can be used as temporary means when traveling. But don’t let it carry you away when it comes to nurturing the proper sleep for your child. That is not what they were made to do.
For anyone, sleep is important. With emphasis on the pregnant women and expectant parents, it would be advisable to get all the sleep you can get. Aside from potent health issues, lack of sleep may lead to small birth sizes, something that a study recently showed. The study, which included 289 8-year-olds born healthy and full-term, found that the lower the children’s weight and length at birth, the greater their odds of having poor sleep or sleep disturbances such as sleep-related breathing problems or nightmares. What’s more, a mother’s prenatal drinking is a habit that can impair fetal growth and development was linked to a greater risk of childhood sleep problems. This is how sensitive a pregnant woman has to consider. Sleep is perhaps the best thing that they can do at their current state, not only for them but for the child they are carrying. This is a good example to show that a child’s health and state would depend largely on how a mom would take care of herself during the pre-natal stages. We all know that sleep apnea and snorers have been found to be a health hazard since it is associated with the heart and the breathing problems leading to snoring. But apparently, this study that was made in Britain claimed otherwise. In fact it can even prolong life which is really quite a shocking revelation. Peretz Lavie, who carried out the research at the Lloyd Rigler Sleep Apnoea Research Laboratory, in Haifa, Israel, said that the results were “astonishing”. “We know that sleep apnoea does reduce life expectancy for people under the age of 50, so to find that it could actually prolong life for elderly patients was quite a shock.” Dr Lavie speculates that the reason for the findings could be the way the body responds to a lack of blood to major organs, which can be caused when breathing stops.
Through a study conducted by researchers from University of Louisville’s Galia Soukhova-O’Hare, it was confirmed that sleep apnea affects another health issue and this has something to do with erectile dysfunction and sex drives for men. If you think of it, the logic makes sense. For one, how can you expect a man to have sex if he has breathing problems? Well even though the experiment was made through the use of the usual experimental mice, at least now it has been confirmed that sleep apnea is indeed affecting parts of the human anatomy so sleep apnea really has to be avoided or treated as much as possible. How were sleep apnea and ED linked? Testosterone wasn’t the problem; testosterone levels were unaffected by sleep apnea. And there weren’t any problems with the mice’s anatomy, either. But the mice did have lower levels of an enzyme needed to make nitric oxide during the experiment, and they may have needed nitric oxide to help with blood flow for erections. Apparently this was proven in a study at University of Virginia where it was found that children with larger necks should have clinical evaluation to be able to determine if sleep-related issues will exist. Age-adjusted neck size correlated with body-mass index (BMI) and weight and showed a higher correlation with AHI than did BMI, weight or tonsil size. Neck size also showed a strong inverse correlation with mean oxygen saturation and was a better predictor of mean oxygen saturation than BMI, weight or tonsil size, the study found. “Children with bigger neck sizes for age should be queried about snoring, apnea, excessive sleepiness, and hyperactivity.
