Headaches from Sleep

Most of us focus a lot on how to be productive but are we really aware of the diseases and illnesses around us? Sleep, something that people take for granted the most is perhaps one of the worst enemies you may have to face. Worst, you may not even know that you have a sleeping problem unless you have regular visits to your local physician.

Apparently majority of the people today may have this unlikely sleep abnormality. We are all pretty much focused on trying to survive but unless we give it much thought, are we among the majority of sleep deprived individuals today?

Well we just have to open our eyes to reality. Sleep issues are there but we normally fail to associate them with sleep disorders. Check this out:

Do you wake up in the morning with a dry mouth and sore throat? Are you irritable and tired throughout the day and suffer from headaches? Do you have trouble remembering or learning things? You may be among the 90% who have no earthly idea they are victim to one of the most common types of sleep related breathing disorders, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This condition disrupts breathing while you are asleep, sometimes over 100 times throughout the night. You may have no recollection that you struggled for breath, snored, choked and gasped to get your breath back.

Lack of Sleep

As far as getting the proper number of hours of sleep is concerned, you would rarely find anyone having the usual 8 hours of sleep. Some turn to the dreaded sleeping pills, which are claimed to be a lot safer these days since they are not as addicting as the olden days but it remains that they are still not the natural means of sleeping.

At risk is our health, making our bodies prone to heart problems and obesity. At a certain age where we are perhaps in the prime of our lives, this will not matter. But the real toll will set in once we age. In time, our bodies will start to show these problems and we will feel that for sure since we will get weaker which will become the opening that these diseases will need to flourish.

So with these in mind, should we turn to sleeping pills to get that much needed sleep? There are still risks and to date, the only thing that they will tell you is that it is not as addictive as the ones we used to take.

On whether that statement will make you feel comfortably depends on how you look at it.

Sleep for Better Health

As far as getting proper sleep is concerned, most people who have found themselves searching for it have obviously found themselves on the losing end and apparently are underachieving. This includes being successful in your career, work, and most of all, maintaining a healthy body and lifestyle.

People today are geared more towards doing more, meeting deadlines and sacrificing by pushing themselves to the limit. At first this does sound noble and something others should follow by example. But if you talk about putting yourself in high risk by leaving your body an open battlefield where diseases and illnesses can penetrate then that is another story.

You cannot expect to be fulfilled and successful if you do not rest and sleep. We can see this as our haggard bodies show something that is missing. If we do have problems with sleeping, a short visit to the doctor or specialist really wouldn’t hurt.

“For healthy people, there’s a big temptation to voluntarily restrict sleep, to stay up an hour or two or get up an hour or two earlier,” said Dr. Greg Belenky, director of the Sleep and Performance Research Center at Washington State University Spokane.

“But you’re really reducing your productivity and exposing yourself to risk,” Belenky added.

Bangungot

If there is one thing that people would hate when it comes to dying, it is the issue of encountering diseases such as epilepsy or Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome. The latter is often deemed as something that results from superstition but it is real. There are several ways to which people explain it such overeating or failure to digest what you eat. But overall, the fact remains that they are not purely superstition but a reality in some deaths of people who are asleep.

It is a form of unlikely ways to which people call a betrayal of sorts since we are powerless when they attack. While we try to avoid them, you just have to note that awake or not, sudden problems such as the Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome will strike at the least time you know it.

You can read more about this type of issue here.

Sleeping ManWe all know that once we reach a certain age, chances are they would feel safe and sound because they are constantly taking vitamins to keep their bodies safe from harms way. All except for sleep apnea that is. While old folks are expected to fare better due to boost in their immune systems, sleep apnea is something that really has to be looked up considering that they are hard to manage for most people today.

So just when you think you have passed the fences of diseases and illnesses, think ahead. If senior people have their share of coping up with them, you can just include sleep apnea to that list.

Researchers found that around half of healthy subjects over the age of 65 had a “respiratory disturbance index” of more than 15 events per hour, compared with only 5% of healthy subjects under 50. According to the study, many physicians consider 15 events per hour to be a clinically significant amount. Individuals who are untreated may develop an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, said study senior author Steven A. Shea, PhD, of Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.
