Now, veterans of all ages will be able to be diagnosed and treated for various sleep issues like obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, central sleep apnea syndromes, narcolepsy, as well as sleep problems associated with traumatic brain injury. The new Sleep Center will be armed with a four-bed, state-of-the-art sleep laboratory that will provide advanced diagnostic sleep studies and therapies such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Also, the center will be conducting home sleep studies for sleep apnea testing. Having poor sleep quality is more than just feeling tired. A lack of sleep can lead to other health problems, productivity problems at work and accidents.
It seems that a new discovery may help women get better sleep. Soy has been found to remedy and provide better sleep, thanks mainly to its estrogen-like compounds which should help post-menopausal women resolve their sleep woes. The compounds are called isoflavones and have been known for testing against health problems which include the likes of menopause, high cholesterol, high blood sugar and increased body fat. To investigate whether isoflavones might be beneficial, 38 postmenopausal women with insomnia were randomly assigned to take either 80 milligrams of the isoflavones or a placebo for four months. All of the study participants underwent polysomnography, which involves spending the night in a sleep lab. This is deemed only temporary so for women who want to try it, don’t expect too much. If the results are to be analyzed, you will agree that this is something that is a temporary remedy, meaning you may have to look for something else to treat your sleep problems. The research shows that health problems are associated with poor sleep quality. When we sleep, our cells regenerate and we also remove toxins and activate immune system cells. But according to a study, you can eat less if you sleep more. Does it make sense? While studies are reliable, it seems like this is similar to sleeping more even if it means craving for something in your stomach. Would that be good or bad? The reason for this is would foregoing sleep in times of hunger possibly lead to other health problems like ulcers? Losing weight is one thing but affecting the other health concerns is another.
Some of us may be drooling in our sleep and to many, it is only something that occurs occasionally. However, for some people, it may be something serious such as indications of health problems over the horizon. To shed more light into it, here are some medical explanations on drooling based on answers provided by Dr. Ng Chee Hon, a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon: Excessive secretion is caused by inflammation such as teething, dental caries and infections. Other causes include side effects from drugs like tranquilisers and anti-convulsants, pregnancy, excessive starch intake, intoxication and rabies infection. Anatomy causes such as a large tongue, crowded teeth, poor lip closure and enlarged adenoids and tonsils may predispose a patient to salivary spill. Now drooling may not be a cause for alarm. But if you want to consider your age as a factor, it would be best to see a specialist for the sake of preventive maintenance.
Just when we thought that taking naps can more or less make up for our lack of sleep, a study conducted by the Vanderbilt University Medical Center showed that naps in elders at various times of the day are likely to be suffering from serious health disorders that include pain, diabetes and respiratory problems. Kinda weird if you ask me since considering people who are in the prime of their lives look towards these naps to help them gain more rest towards combating these usual health problems that come with age. Strange as it may, this study proves it so it should be a warning to people who love to nap during the daytime. “Our study is important both clinically and for future research. It points out the need for health care providers to discuss nighttime sleep and daytime napping with older individuals,” study author Suzanne E. Goldman said in a prepared statement. The study “also points out the need to identify the causes of disturbed nighttime sleep in order to determine appropriate treatment. Our study suggests that older adults nap because of health problems and disrupted sleep at night. Thus the napping may reflect needed sleep,” Goldman said.
