The Sweet Art of Sleep Seduction
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung July 20th, 2008 in How to sleep better, SLEEP News, SLEEP Psychology, Sleep Apnea, Sleep Cures, Sleep Disorders, Sleep Education, Sleep Events.
Sleep is basic and one of the easiest things that people may know to do. But even as it seems to be as simple, sleep issues such as sleep apnea and insomnia have so far made people take on sleep on another angle, considering it a serious problem once you notice that sleeping the normal way has been differing as you live your life.
The last thing any person would want is to get help with regards to sleep. In fact, when you are told to attend a sleep seminar, you may end up rolling in laughter. Being taught how to sleep may affect some egos and make people ignore it. But seriously, for specialist such as Robert de Stefano who holds workshops entitled “The Sweet Art of Sleep Seduction”, sleep deprived and insomniacs can learn a lot. The goal of this workshop is to help people and not ridicule them. All it takes is a couple of hours of listening to fully understand what they are up against and what health risks may be involved.
“One of the pillars of what I’m teaching is the concept of being able to transition out of your day body and mind into a body and mind more positively prepared for a night of deep sleep,” he says. “We’re throwing ourselves into bed and hoping that we’ll relax and get to sleep.”
“The strongest propaganda that insomnia has going for it is that a lot of people think it’s a disease or an illness,” says de Stefano, 52. “Our answer has been to take a pill, but you can’t force or will sleep; you have to lure it. As the title (of the workshop) goes, you seduce it.”

Some Myths of Sleeping and Insomnia
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung July 17th, 2008 in How to sleep better, Insomnia, SLEEP News, Sleep Myths.
Sleeping is one of the things that people would love to do. But apparently, people have to discipline themselves and make sure that they get the adequate sleep recommended for people today. Apparently, there are some beliefs that many would agree to while others would consider as based on beliefs and myths. But myth or not, it remains that we have to manage ourselves well since in the end, lacking sleep will take its toll on us.
Here are some common myths of sleeping and insomnia. We may or may not agree with them but they are apparently related to how we perceive and understand sleep as a whole.
- Humans Need Eight Hours Sleep a Night: There are many ways of sleeping and few cultures sleep in eight-hour consolidated blocks like we do. In places like Bali and New Guinea, people tend to slip in and out of sleep as they need it, napping more during the day, and getting up more at night.
- Sleep Isn’t Just a Bodily Function: Sleep is a biological, physiological system, akin to the cardiovascular system, the nervous system and so on.
- Animals Don’t Have Sleep Problems: Insomnia occurs in animals and insects, too, sort of. Technically, insomnia is defined as a “complaint,” and since animals can’t complain, it’s difficult to measure in them
- Falling Asleep Is a Gradual Process. Nope. Instead, for most people, it switches on and off like a light switch. But for insomniacs and narcoleptics, the switch doesn’t quite work.
- Sleeping Less Burns More Calories. In the short term, yes, but sleeping less probably won’t help you lose weight. Lack of sleep suppresses our natural appetite-depressants, while fueling appetite-increasers, often leading to weight gain.

Tai Chi Yourself to Better Sleep
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung July 2nd, 2008 in How to sleep better, SLEEP News, Sleep Cures, Sleep Education, Sleep Issues.
We have been hearing the growing relation of obesity with sleep these days and indirectly, the point is people have to spice up their lives with certain activities that can perhaps add spice to their normal routine. This does not really entail rigorous activities and in fact, a study has showed that Tai Chi Chih, an ancient form of Chinese Martial arts, can significantly help improve sleeping patterns.
This is a good activity to participate in considering that it is a better alternative to healthier lives compared to the usual reliance of people on drugs to get that much needed sleep.
Studies show that more than half of older adults experience sleeping problems at least a few times a week, Irwin and his team note in their report. While CBT can ease insomnia, few therapists have the training to offer this type of treatment, which is also relatively expensive. And while aerobic exercise can also help people sleep better, vigorous workouts aren’t an option for many seniors.
To investigate whether tai chi chih might be an option, Irwin and his team analyzed sleep quality in 112 people aged 59 to 86 participating in a randomized, controlled trial of the martial art for preventing shingles. Tai chi chih instruction was given in 45-minute sessions, three times a week.
