One would think that with the growing problem of co-sleeping with infants, adults and parents would be more careful and take it more sensibly. But with new reports of co-sleeping casualties for November, this doesn’t seem to be the case. There were two separate incidents reported. One had to do with Yasmine Y. Ashley, a 1.5 month infant who turned unresponsive after sleeping alongside her mother and the mom’s said boyfriend. According to the Medical Examiner’s Office report, “the deceased was placed on her back, next to her mother, fed and fell asleep, in the full sized bed. When her mother’s boyfriend came to bed at 2:00 a.m., the deceased appeared to be ‘OK.’ ” “The deceased was on one side of the bed, mom was in the middle, and mother’s boyfriend slept on the other side of the bed.

When her mother’s boyfriend came to bed at 2:00 a.m., the deceased appeared to be ‘OK.’ ”

“The deceased was on one side of the bed, mom was in the middle, and mother’s boyfriend slept on the other side of the bed. When the deceased mother awoke for a feeding at 4:30 a.m., the deceased was still supine, with blood coming from her mouth and nose.”

The other had to do with a certain Demirrion L. Washington, 2.5 months old who died when she was sleeping alongside her mother and sister. The mom went for a shower and when she came back, she felt Demirrion’s cold skin.

While both parties tried to seek help, everything was apparently too late. These are just some of the case reported for November which many of you mothers out there may want to seriously consider.

It is understandable that many parents want to have their babies by their side but be wary of the risks since in these cases, it is apparent that it is a matter of life and death.

Are you against co-sleeping? Well if you are and you happen to be in Milwaukee, join their scheduled campaign against co-sleeping. This is a call for parents to avoid sleeping with their babies who may end up suffocating to death as the case was for this 6-week old baby girl who died while sharing the bed with her mother. The mom found her baby dead when she woke up. This is perhaps any parent’s fear or worst nightmare. At such young stages, babies should indeed be left to their own bed or crib with no blankets, toys or pillows. They should be laid on their backs so that they are face up to avoid suffocation hazards.

For anyone, sleep is important. With emphasis on the pregnant women and expectant parents, it would be advisable to get all the sleep you can get. Aside from potent health issues, lack of sleep may lead to small birth sizes, something that a study recently showed. The study, which included 289 8-year-olds born healthy and full-term, found that the lower the children’s weight and length at birth, the greater their odds of having poor sleep or sleep disturbances such as sleep-related breathing problems or nightmares. What’s more, a mother’s prenatal drinking is a habit that can impair fetal growth and development was linked to a greater risk of childhood sleep problems. This is how sensitive a pregnant woman has to consider. Sleep is perhaps the best thing that they can do at their current state, not only for them but for the child they are carrying. This is a good example to show that a child’s health and state would depend largely on how a mom would take care of herself during the pre-natal stages.
Following a regular bedtime routine and sleeping pattern can help a lot in the sleeping behavior of infants and maternal mood. Results indicate that the establishment of a nightly bedtime routine produced significant reductions in problematic sleep behaviors for infants and toddlers. Improvements were seen in latency and sleep onset and in the number and duration of night wakings. Toddlers were less likely to call out to their parents or get out of their crib/bed during the night. Sleep continuity increased and there was a significant decrease in the number of mothers who rated their child’s sleep as problematic. Maternal mood also significantly improved. According to the study, sleep problems are one of the most common concerns of parents of young children; approximately 20 to 30 percent of infants and toddlers experience sleep difficulties. Previous studies have found that successful treatment of children’s sleep problems with behavioral interventions also result in improvements in parental well-being. “There is no question that maternal mood and children’s sleep impact one another. The better a child sleeps and the easier bedtime is, the better a mother’s mood is going to be,” said Mindell. “In addition, a mom who is not feeling tense, depressed, and … Continue reading →
a

While a mom makes it a point to do all the chores even if she is exhausted, it may come to a point that she will want to sleep without any distractions. It is in these cases that this door pillow may come in handy. The “Mommy Needs Sleep” door pillow stresses a point without needing to shout or make it clear that she is dead tired. Hanging it outside her bedroom is enough to tell the people in the house to not to disturb her. A good buy for $5.00 only.
After laboring for 10 months, once mothers give birth, you have to wonder if they can now start looking forward to making up for lost sleep. Apparently this is a problem for pregnant women who need to ensure the overall health of the child they are bearing and of course themselves. Alertness and being aware of what is going on inside these 10 months is indeed tedious. Some would call it a sacrifice for the sake of bringing joy and life to the world once more. So when the child is out, can a mom sleep better? Highly unlikely considering now they have to take care of the child. Sleep deprivation starts to set in and apparently a newborn child will always look for her mother. A mother can lie down in bed. But that does not mean that they can sleep through it. For sure they will wake up ever so often and once that happens, you have to sacrifice some more; this time for putting the baby to sleep so you too can sleep!
