At times, slouching will often lead in tempting you to take a quick doze or maybe a short nap. Everything is perfectly fine except of course if you are in the office and you have tons of paperwork to do. So rather than wait for your boss to take notice and most likely get you into trouble, here is an advanced way to save your neck. The Philips Ergosensor Monitor will take heed of your “slouching” position and will eventually yell at you if you do. This was all made possible through the monitor’s ergosensor which seems to be more of a webcam that monitors your posture. The device gives you corrective feedback as well. This comes in the forms of small icons that flash up at the bottom right of your screen. The monitor should be perfect for ensuring that employees are not sleeping on the job, a good thing for office perhaps and to make sure that they are getting their money’s worth and productivity.
You may have probably heard or read somewhere that lack of sleep is likely to be tied up with obesity and today we find an interesting highlight that may sort of explain the whole issue. Ordinarily, lack of sleep may make you think you are forced to eat less with the notion that you would prefer to sleep than eat. But an experiment proved otherwise. Apparently the trick was done using some photos of food on 12 normally weighted men. They did not sleep and after some scans showed a high level of activity that is associated with hunger. They were reportedly hungrier even without sleep compared to the ones who got some nap. The heightened desire to eat is what the scientists call “Hedonic Stimulus Processing”. So if you want some good advice, try to get some sleep and forget that notion of sleeping over eating when needed. It may make a difference in calories, especially if you are trying to lose weight.
Being assigned to the midnight shift of any organization may be something an employee may not necessarily like but still, there are duties to be done. One occupation that has had its share of problems would be that of being an Air Traffic Controller. We had heard of one instance where people of this nature fell asleep on accident but it seems the latest is that this one fell asleep on purpose. This is about an air controller at Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson airport who fell asleep for 5 hours last Feb. 19. And due to this problem, seven aircrafts landed without the aid of the guiding officer which thankfully did not render any disaster. As you would guess, the controller got fired for his intentional tirade and no details were given on why he decided to intentionally take a nap at such a critical hour. Apparently, the people over at the FAA need to review some of their policies as far as hiring people in this niche. There is a flaw and to avoid potential disaster, this matter needs addressing even though it does seem to be pointing towards a sleep and stressing job for anyone.
Here is another study that should let you know why naps shouldn’t be overlooked. The study was conducted at the University of California which found that sleeping before learning something is just as important as sleeping for about 100 minutes. In a study done on 44 volunteers, study co-author Matthew Walker, explained that the volunteers who took a nap before undergoing a memorization test ended up with higher test points than their counterparts who did not take a nap. Apparently through the volunteers, they were able to single out improvements and declines in performance and memory boost. Calling it a sleep spindle, they are described as a short, synchronized burst of electrical activity. Hence, when idle or when you have the time for it, take a short nap. It may improve your productivity. This is a makeshift long-pillow that hugs your head with gentle pressure, giving you the relief of complete darkness, soft muffled noise and 360 degrees of pillow protection. This odd-looking pillow should be great for taking good naps and is made of plush minky fleece and squishy polyfill. A Velcro fastener helps keep it all together, allowing variation in fit and pressure. The WAN costs $14.99 and should be an ideal sleep partner, especially for the ones who need better and more sleep.
There is a new product you should watch out for after the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall for Nap Nanny Portable Baby Recliners by Baby Matters LLC of Berwyn, PA. The product was designed for sleeping, resting and playing and includes a foam base with an inclined indentation for the infant to sit, along with a fitted fabric cover and a three point harness. The first generation model does not have “D”-rings for the harness. Apparently there are reports that a 4 month old baby died from the said crib. The child was in harness but found hanging over the side of the recliner. The products were sold at toy and children’s retail stores nationwide and on the web, including at the company website, www.napnanny.com, from January 2009 through July 2010. They retailed at approximately $130.
It certainly does help to carry something even in naps or sleeping and now a study from the Centre for Sleep Research at the University of South Australia proves that dreams can be a good boost to the learning curve. It has always been believed that sleeping after a learning task can help them perform better, something that may be attributed to being able to relax and recalling the last things you did prior to dozing off. To test their theory, the researchers taught people how to locate a specific shape somewhere in a computer-generated maze. They made one group of participants have a nap before trying the exercise again. A second group of people were kept awake. A third group were allowed to sleep, but the researchers woke them up several times to check whether they were dreaming.
It is that time of the year again when many people are expected to be stressed out and incur a lot of sleepless nights. This could be because of shopping, overeating, and other things associated with the coming Holidays. To make sure that people don’t get lost and let their sleeping habits get the best of them, SleepBetter.org offers some tips for consumers for the Christmas season. Keep Your Schedule. Try to make your sleeping habits as regular as possible. Try to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. Don’t spend your day off from work in bed or you won’t feel rested the next day. Try to stay away from greasy and heavy meals since you may find yourself having a hard to sleep since you are unable to digest them properly. Go easy on drinking and the alcohol content you may consume. It will create problems during the second half of the sleep cycle, when the effects have worn off and a backlash effect occurs. Travel Smart. If you’re traveling for the holidays as a passenger, invest in a travel pillow to catch a nap, wear comfortable … Continue reading →
a

Though you may not be the coffee drinking addict, it remains that some people would be offered in coffee stores like Starbucks “Regular” or “Decaf”? Especially if you are visiting them in the night, normally we have this belief that decaf will not bother us that much when it comes to sleeping when we get home. Or does it? Coffee is still coffee. While drinking decaf is supposed to have lower caffeine content, an element that is supposed to keep us awake, it seems that it doesn’t matter. For one, being awake would depend not only on what we consume but also in our overall state. For example, if we have had a rigorous day and our bodies are really about to collapse on us, you can be assured that not even coffee can keep us awake. We may end up telling ourselves that we would take a nap but sooner than you know it, you may be surprised to find that you have slept practically the regular sleeping hours one is expected to get. The fact of the matter here is that whatever type of coffee, regardless if it is decaf or … Continue reading →
a

For sure most of you drink coffee.

The fact of the matter here is that whatever type of coffee, regardless if it is decaf or not, may not necessarily have a factor. It can keep you awake, but if your body is not up to it rest assured you will give in to sleep.

According to Tom Round, vice president of the product’s maker, Silver Lake Research, 25 of the 100 decaf samples the biotech firm tested during the research phase had too-high caffeine levels.

Not great news for decaf drinkers. But then again, recent research has linked caffeine consumption to a host of health benefits, such as improved cognitive function and sharper aerobic capacity. And a recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine linked coffee consumption to a longer life span.

At times, it is easy to spot the people who lack sleep. Other than looking haggard overall, you can simply see it in their eyes. Eye bags are bulging and they have some red eyes at times as well. As far as eyes turning red, it should not be surprising. Normally, when a person would see you with red eyes, they would say you took a quickie nap. So if that is the case, why? Well for sure, you are trying to make up for lost sleep perhaps on the night before. The next time you see red or feel that your eyes are so strained, don’t be surprised. You need to make up for sleep and your eyes are obviously telling you why. “When you don’t get enough sleep, your eyes haven’t had enough time to refresh themselves. As a result, the blood vessels near the surface of the eye become enlarged and dilated, causing the bloodshot look,” says Dr. Press. “The best remedy is, of course, to get more sleep, but there are different things you can do to get rid of your red, dry eyes.” (Source) PR Web a blood vessels, dry eyes, eye-bags, How to sleep … Continue reading →
a

For people who find themselves on the go at times, it would be best to consider a siesta or a short nap before proceeding with your daily chores. Many would not have this privilege especially if they are in an office. However they can try to steal a couple of winks when they are on lunch break. Remember that breaks are given normally up to an hour and for people taking meals, sometimes you can finish eating way beyond the final seconds of your break time. People need to recharge midway at times. Short as it may you may be surprised at the difference that short stolen naps can provide especially in terms of productivity. The siesta has been around for thousands of years and was even regarded as a necessity, rather than a luxury. It is still widely practiced in Spain today, though they also use it to get out of the sun during the hottest part of the day and can therefore take as long as two hours to rest.
Just when we thought that taking naps can more or less make up for our lack of sleep, a study conducted by the Vanderbilt University Medical Center showed that naps in elders at various times of the day are likely to be suffering from serious health disorders that include pain, diabetes and respiratory problems. Kinda weird if you ask me since considering people who are in the prime of their lives look towards these naps to help them gain more rest towards combating these usual health problems that come with age. Strange as it may, this study proves it so it should be a warning to people who love to nap during the daytime. “Our study is important both clinically and for future research. It points out the need for health care providers to discuss nighttime sleep and daytime napping with older individuals,” study author Suzanne E. Goldman said in a prepared statement. The study “also points out the need to identify the causes of disturbed nighttime sleep in order to determine appropriate treatment. Our study suggests that older adults nap because of health problems and disrupted sleep at night. Thus the napping may reflect needed sleep,” Goldman said.
So we feel that sleeping is something we can take for granted. Sleep helps us move and go forth. Similar to cars, a person without sleep will encounter bumpy roads along the way since chances are; they would get dizzy spells and long for a short nap or sleep. A person can only go so much when he lacks sleep. Further, he may underachieve and one day just stumble and fall. We can only go towards a certain extent, but continuous abuse through foregoing the required amount of sleep that all people would need is a path in the wrong direction. There is a point where people may break down, and lack of energy to carry out things both in mind and body will prove to be costly at some point.
