We have come across a lot of stories where sleep deprivation can be dangerous to people overall but if you want some reality check, here is a story that should become a cause for concern. Traveling can be a big problem for drivers, especially when you don’t get the proper sleep if you are behind the wheel. Fighting it off with coffee or some other stuff to keep you awake would be helpful but there will come a point that you may eventually find yourself giving in to much needed rest and slumber.
Sleep deprivation is obviously a health issue and while many feel that they feel floating due to the lack of shuteye, it does have a say on your appetite and eventual road to obesity if you are not careful. This was of course learned thanks to a study from the Columbia University’s New York Obesity Research Center. Hunger has been identified as an effect of sleep deprivation together with potential consumption of additional calories. Actually, it only solidifies the claim that obesity does have some connections with the sleep problem, leading to a potential causative effect. Women in the study who slept for only four hours ate an average of 329 more calories than when they were allotted nine hours. Men consumed 263 more. The study consisted of 13 male and 13 female volunteers between the ages of 30 and 45. They followed a strict schedule for two 6-day stints, one allowing the longer sleep times and one keeping them slightly sleep-deprived.
Sleep loss has been known to provide some issues, both physically and mentally. And today, it was learned that sleep loss is quite critical when you talk about kids with ADHD. Sleep loss was found to be a contributory factor towards their status and may eventually render a negative impact along the way. After mean nightly sleep loss of about 55 minutes for six nights, the performance of children with ADHD on a neurobehavioral test deteriorated from the subclinical range to the clinical range of inattention on four of six measures, including omission errors and reaction time. The study involved 43 children, 11 with ADHD and 32 controls. They had a mean age of about 9 years. Though it may not come as a surprise, given that sleep deprivation does have its share of controversial effects, it seems to worsen the ADHD kids. So if you have one, better have them see a sleep specialist as soon as you can. The idea does make sense and to back up their campaign, they have commissioned comedian Mike Birbiglia to lead the charge. Why Birbiglia? Well the comedian has been known to have sleepwalking problems and he poses to be the best aid in informing the fans about the issues one has to deal with as far as sleep problems are concerned. The efforts come in time with the growing problem of sleep deprivation plaguing parts of the world. With softer fabrics and beddings, you can just imagine the impact it would have on people who need all the help they can get as far as getting valued sleep is concerned.
Here is a tip for the parents out there. When it comes to knowing how long and when your babies sleep at night, 2 to 4 month old babies sleep normally sleep through the night. This was found through a study made by the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. The study should be helpful to parents, especially the ones who have to deal with sleep deprivation since they have to deal with their babies closely. A new study suggests that about half of babies will be sleeping through the night after about two or three months. And the good news is that parents may experience better sleep once their child reaches 5 months. From there, parents can experience an uninterrupted and substantial period of sleep. No thanks to extended daylight, teenagers find themselves coping with the extended daylight exposure and hence incurring some sleep problems as supported by researchers over at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center (LRC). Over time when coupled with having to rise early for school, this delay in sleep onset may lead to teen sleep deprivation and mood changes, and increase risk of obesity and perhaps under-performance in school. The new findings detail the impact of early evening light in spring on melatonin onset and sleep times.
Sleep deprivation is something obviously hurting people nowadays and it seems that these findings by the National Sleep Foundation may open more eyes than usual. From an average sleeping time of 9 hours, Americans are sleeping just 6.9 hours per night. This represents a two hour drop per night since the 19th century, one hour per night over the past 50 years, and about 15 to 25 minutes per night just since 2001. A number of health factors can result from this, including heart problems, obesity and high blood pressures. The good news is that these effects can be reversed by getting an adequate amount of sleep. The University of Chicago study on sleep duration and appetite found that allowing the study subjects to sleep 10 hours for two consecutive nights returned the hormones to normal levels and lowered hunger and appetite ratings by almost 25%.
Here is something weird. It seems that for some reason, sleep deprived people may encounter some reduced brain density courtesy of a study from the University of Cambridge. This was done through brain imaging where the people over at the University were able to link insomnia to brain density reduction in grey matter, fundamental to brain activity. The study is significant because it begins to explain how insomnia disrupts the brain’s functioning. Whereas previous researchers have known that insomnia disrupts the brain’s functioning, the real cause of the malfunction had not been known.
Actor Sharad Kelkar is the newest member of the sleep deprived club thanks to a hectic life in the showbiz industry leaving him with little time to sleep. He has been shooting for long hours which approximate between 16 to 17 hours a day. While he does intend to resolve his sleeping problem, it is apparent that this is just one of the many things that a person has to pay for fame. To try and make up for lost sleep, he is trying to complete the shooting for Bairi Piya so that he can have a long rest afterwards. Hopefully his health can keep up since we all know that sleep deprivation does have a bearing on it. The Harmonic Sleep CD from Sound Health Products does offer the usual soothing sounds to make you sleep but features subliminal “harmonics” that are said to encourage slow, relaxing sleep waves in the brain even though they are too faint to hear. Alternatively, the Delta Sleep System CD contains tones that supposedly match the frequency of delta sleep waves, in theory cuing the brain to make sleep waves of its own. Both CDs are sold at various sites online. The Harmonic Sleep CD sells for about $20. A two-CD set of the Delta Sleep System also costs about $20. Weird as it may seem, sleep deprivation has been bugging both genders but of the two, a research finds that women are actually getting better sleep than men. Through a study participants kept a sleep diary and wore a device called an actigraph on their wrists to determine their sleeping behavior and sleep patterns. And afterwards, the actigraphs themselves revealed that men actually had less sleep than women at 6 ½ hours. Women slept 15 minutes more. As people get older they tend to sleep less, and to sleep more lightly. But this doesn’t mean we all have insomnia to look forward to. Obviously, the latter was in reference to women who complained more about Insomnia. Older people should realize they may need to sleep less and go to bed a bit later, and avoid snoozing away the day. This is a familiar cycle where you have to admit that once Summer sets in, parents enjoy the break as well since they avoid having to wake up early to attend to their little tykes. It is important that parents recognize that getting less sleep can affect disposition, learning ability, and recall. Parents with existing sleeping disorders need to be especially careful during this time of transition. Dr. Michael Lacey, the Medical Director of the Atlanta Sleep Medicine Clinic says, “Adding more sleep deprivation to someone with an existing sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea can throw him or her over the edge. This extra sleep loss can potentially harm mood, ability to function at work, and even negatively affect the entire family.” Parents should also remember that sleep is absolutely essential for children’s performance at school.
Sleep deprivation is common for people who have to work on shifts. There are a lot of factors contributing to it. But among them include that of the body clock. Normally, we are all used to standard sleep at night scenario but no thanks to the jobs that cater to different time zones, the need to earn a living despite this constraint has to be done. The only bright note about it is that the pay is better. Companies provide night differential for taking on graveyard shift but you just have to ask yourself, is it worth it? Some say it is but other alter their body clocks which may become a health hazard if they are not careful. There are there are 3 factors that affect employee sleep patterns: Shift Length Fixed vs. Rotating Shifts Shift Start Times Each have their own contributions to sleep deprivation and while many want to address the problem, it is a burden that some have to take. Shift changes practically assure you that you have to sacrifice some hours of sleep since the transition may not give the proper allowance. As far as shift start times, it all takes getting used to.

There are there are 3 factors that affect employee sleep patterns:

Shift Length

Fixed vs. Rotating Shifts

Shift Start Times

Each have their own contributions to sleep deprivation and while many want to address the problem, it is a burden that some have to take. Shift changes practically assure you that you have to sacrifice some hours of sleep since the transition may not give the proper allowance.

As far as shift start times, it all takes getting used to. But you can be that once it is time to go to work, drowsy or sleepy employees are reporting for work which could take a while to normalize. In these cases, Coffee Anyone?

Now this type of sleep disorder has not been proven to be common in humans but if studies make any progress, Equine Sleep Disorders may soon be found to be a new type of sleep disorder that we have to deal with. The good news is that for now, it is a disorder linked to horses. But if advanced research and studies have their way, we may just hear about this sleep disorder linked to the human gene pool. In the February 2007 issue of EQUUS magazine, California veterinarian Joe Bertone, DVM, describes an equine sleep disorder he has been studying for more than a decade. It occurs when horses, for physical or psychological reasons, are unable to lie down for adequate deep (REM) sleep. After prolonged periods of sleep deprivation, the horse begins to slip into REM sleep at any quiet moment, literally starting to collapse before awakening and catching himself before hitting the ground. This condition, says Bertone, is different than narcolepsy, a neurologic disorder in which otherwise well-rested horses slip into REM sleep during periods of excitement. To view the videos of this new sleep disorder, you can check them out at this site.
Online gaming has been identified as one of the major reasons why most kids and teens are losing sleep, being glued too much on their computer to play their online adventure games and slug it out with other players from the world. Apparently, this means sacrificing sleep as well, something that has become a concern for parents on the health of their kids. Blizzard Entertainment cannot be blamed for developing such games. In fact, much of the responsibility is pegged at the hands of the actual players and the parents in being able to control the frequency of their log on times. The law should be laid out by the parents. Games and vices will always be there but the ultimate decision of disciplining themselves should be the main objective if they are to address the issue of lack of sleep and sleep deprivation among kids and teens.
Other than getting the right education, most students have to deal with sleep deprivation sooner or later to keep up with the strains of fulfilling requirements for school. We see today that teenagers no longer have the luxury of taking their time before they study and hit the sack. These days, they have to be fully aware that untimely insertion of extra-curricular activities is like taking the place of sleep time. This is not to condone their acts. But the fact of the matter is even the standard student has to sacrifice sleep for his studies. Factors? Well the school time is one. They are expected to go to classes early and leave late. Add the need to review some lessons and you will find that they will need to stay up late to ensure they complete their assignments and reports. Sleep? It can come later and that is where sleep deprivation and insomnia set in.
One thing about sleep deprivation in women is that when they have hot flashes during sleep, tendency is for them to get up and do the necessary to ease the discomfort. While there are a number of ways to go about it, sleep is something that serves as collateral damage as it is also affected when pains of menopausal disorders strike. But thanks to this ongoing solution from Bionovo, women may yet see the last of these issues as the Emeryville business (NASDAQ: BNVI) had already reported positive results from a Phase II trial of the drug, saying patients had fewer hot flashes than women taking a placebo. If all goes well, then perhaps women no longer have to worry about these issues and finally get the much deserved sleep that they have long deserved. In fact, don’t get them pets at all since this study by Karl Franklin of University Hospital in Umea, Sweden revealed that kids exposed to pets such as cats and dogs are susceptible to various germs that may contribute to the inflammatory processes and thereby alter upper airway anatomy early in life. While we have a hard time to tell our kids no, this time around, we just have to and explain to them that it is all for their own good! Snoring is no laughing matter. Besides sleep deprivation — for the snorer, and especially for anyone within earshot — snoring is linked to more serious consequences. It increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, such as heart attacks or a stroke, and can even result in premature death. Dopamine, a fell-good brain chemical helps keep sleep-deprived people awake. But the question here is on whether it is helpful. Most people are trying to fend off these drugs that keep us awake. Many are likewise looking for cures to cure their sleep deprivation and sleep disorders. But while these things are a given, it would be wise to analyze how Dopamine helps and for what purpose. For sure there will be after-effects and consequences. But for people who have to be on the go, stay awake most of the time, Dopamine may be an option but for how long? Sleep deprivation increased dopamine in the striatum, a part of the brain that registers motivation and reward. Dopamine also went up in the thalamus, a brain region that helps control alertness, when the volunteers were sleep-deprived.
We all work 5 days a week. 6 if you are in the service sector. But overall, the issue on whether a holiday break or weekend would help us regulate sleep or at least be able to get back to our regular sleeping patterns is something that many would want to know. For sure, breaks are much needed for people who have to work a lot during the week. But as far as sleep is concerned, it can regulate and nourish sleep once again but apparently not fully. Regeneration and rejuvenating our strength at these times is something welcome and perhaps refreshing. But as far as making it a habit, perhaps it would be best to consider that once Monday is here, you may be back to following the same old chaotic sleep deprivation mess. Mondays welcome well-rested employees for sure. But while that may mean production on a new energy, there are people who may not necessarily welcome Mondays with open arms. Some people may find the weekend all too enjoying that they want more of it. If there is something about vacations and weekends, it is the matter of not getting too much of it. Sleep is essential … Continue reading →
a

We all work 5 days a week. 6 if you are in the service sector. But overall, the issue on whether a holiday break or weekend would help us regulate sleep or at least be able to get back to our regular sleeping patterns is something that many would want to know.

Some people may find the weekend all too enjoying that they want more of it. If there is something about vacations and weekends, it is the matter of not getting too much of it.

Sleep is essential and perhaps it is safe to say now, the proper amount of sleep and when not to get too much of it is an issue. Sleep has affected us both mentally and as a whole. Perhaps a disciplined mindset as well as regular health check-ups can ensure that we get the proper sleeping hours due for a normal human being.

The intake of various herbal medicine or unknown remedies to help cure sleep deprivation are no different from the usual health-related issues we have. But as far as medication is concerned, unknown meds should still come with the necessary prescription to avoid problems in the long run which may even cost you your life. Such is the issue of the illegal herbal pill called estazolam which had claimed the life of Michael Berggen who died in a single vehicle roll-over two years ago. The only thing the Canadian authorities have gathered is that it is dangerous but as far as origin is concerned, they are just dumbfounded right now. The veteran trucker and father of four was making his first run of the morning on Boxing Day, 2006, when he drove out of Hines Creek, 560 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, lost control of his tandem truck, hit a snowbank and rolled. He wasn’t wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene. The medical examiner later discovered estazolam in his blood – a rare, powerful tranquilizer which can cause drowsiness and dizziness. It’s not clear what role the drug played in his death, if any, but Provincial Court Judge McIntosh presided … Continue reading →
a

Lack of sleep is something that has dire consequences and usually this is connected with our health. We all need to rest and sleep so that our bodies and internal genes and organs are able to function and last longer to keep us healthy. But while others tend to forego sleep for the sake of producing more, they are actually sacrificing more in terms of intellect and sensible living. Sleep deprivation is an abuse we lash at our bodies. Without rest, we find ourselves opening a door for all illnesses and diseases to come in which if contracted may place us in living shorter. Medical intervention in the form of specialists and pills are great but they still cannot guarantee if our lives will last longer because of them. Sleeping is still the most important part of living healthy and making our body function properly. “We spend – or should spend – a third of our lives sleeping,” says Amita Sehgal, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience and an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). “The idea that so much time is spent in sleep is intriguing. Also, sleep deprivation has serious health consequences and impairs cognitive function.” (Source) One … Continue reading →
a

After laboring for 10 months, once mothers give birth, you have to wonder if they can now start looking forward to making up for lost sleep. Apparently this is a problem for pregnant women who need to ensure the overall health of the child they are bearing and of course themselves. Alertness and being aware of what is going on inside these 10 months is indeed tedious. Some would call it a sacrifice for the sake of bringing joy and life to the world once more. So when the child is out, can a mom sleep better? Highly unlikely considering now they have to take care of the child. Sleep deprivation starts to set in and apparently a newborn child will always look for her mother. A mother can lie down in bed. But that does not mean that they can sleep through it. For sure they will wake up ever so often and once that happens, you have to sacrifice some more; this time for putting the baby to sleep so you too can sleep! Read the papers or watch the news, you will see these things as the headlines:

Recession

Rising Prices

War

Economic Downturn

Global Warming

Now if you were the naïve person in the world today, you would not care and simply go your way. All you want to do is to really live your life one day at a time and just try and make do with what you can. Apparently, this is no laughing matter. The world is getting a more hectic place to live in and for sure you will lose a lot of sleep over it.

We all know the value of health as well. We need to sleep and get rest to be able to perform all the things necessary for us to survive. But if we slack a bit, we may lose a lot of things on how we can survive these problems in life. In short, while you have to sleep, who can?

Not included in the list of issues we see today is sleep. Sleep apnea, insomnia and sleep disorders are all growing concerns. They may not be eye-popping issues today but one day they will surely will.

The funny thing is that they may come at a time when all these current events come to be resolved. Now you face a new threat that of which may be aimed towards your health.

Sleep deprivation has been linked with heart disease, obesity, chron ic infections, hypertension, depression . . . and death. It is patently not a good idea to work excessive hours with no sleep, but we are constantly told that, to be an effective, successful and notable individual, this is what we must do. All the evidence suggests that we will make less intelligent judgements without sleep – just as we would if we went for an extended period without, say, food or air – but the pressure is on to prove that we can function anyway.
