Technology has its way of making its way even up to our subconscious selves and with texting a craze these days, it is not really surprising to find some teens falling into this thing called Sleep Texting. It doesn’t really require a lot of explaining, it is what it is – people texting even during sleep. Experts believe that such a phenomenon has become so popular nowadays but will still have the usual repercussions. And the easiest way to sum it all up is that people who get text messages even during the wee hours end up waking up and suffer from disruptive sleep. “Twenty percent are awakened in the middle of the night by getting a text, email or phone call. Not good,” said Dr. Kevin Smith, a pediatric sleep psychologist. So while many believe that this is cool, in the end it may not be so. Sleep Texting is indeed gaining popularity but health-wise, it will take its toll and be a nuisance in the long run.
Here is a touching endeavor for the people in need of better sleep. The initiative comes from the Sleep Experts of Dallas, sharing the gift of sleep to families in North Texas by donating more than 50 mattress sets to the Central Dallas Ministries with the hopes of fighting poverty. Through Sleep Experts’ Rest Assured mattress donation program, every customer’s old bed is recycled and donated to charity. Upon delivery of a customer’s new bed, the old mattress is removed and completely refurbished and then donated to local nonprofit organizations serving families and children who are victims of abuse, homelessness, poverty or illness. To date Sleep Experts has provided more than 7,000 beds to the Dallas/Fort Worth community and donated over $500,000 in recycled mattresses, resulting in more than a million nights of sleep for thousands of families in need.
For sure some of us have had some episodes on wanting to get up from bed but fail to do so? Why is that? Some say it is the inability to move certain parts of the body which many relate to sleep paralysis. Apparently some people have had their experiences and if you want a scientific explanation from it, you may want to associate it with Rapid Eye Movement (REM). REM sleep intrudes into wakefulness, so if you don’t immediately click out of REM sleep and wake up, then you may continue to have this paralysis. Hence it would be best to get some special help regarding this condition. Apparently you will be frightened about being temporarily paralyzed. There are explanations but to remedy it, sleep experts are the best people to teach you how.
We know that most people today are dying to shed that excess calorie in the worst way and of all the things like jogging or hitting the fitness centers, would you believe sleep has its own line of slimming down? Apparently that is what sleep experts are trying to preach these days. Just check out this sleep diet by sleep expert Michael Breus, Ph.D. The “Sleep Diet” calls for a minimum of seven and a half hours of sleep every night. Experts said some people may need more than that. The other rules include not consuming any caffeine after 2:30 p.m. and avoiding alcohol within three hours of going to bed. The final guideline is to go to sleep at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. The complete results of the “Sleep Diet” experiment are profiled in the March edition of Glamour Magazine, and they are encouraging. The participants lost 6 to 15 pounds in 10 weeks without making deliberate changes in what they ate or how much they exercised. Would you buy it? Well for one, you have nothing to lose. Just try it out for a while and see if … Continue reading →
a

Just when you think that the sight of a sleeping person is something to envy from, it would be best to consider the quality of sleep that he or she is getting. Ideally, we all know that great sleep comes from no vice at all meaning nothing in mind and nothing to distract us. With the mounting pressures of crisis and gadgets sprawled anywhere, it would be interesting to note how people can rate their sleep and diagnose if it is indeed true or shallow sleep. This is apparent today for most people. We fail to define the essence of true sleep. Some of us feel that we are sleeping comfortably but at the back of our minds, we may just be telling that to ourselves. There are too many distractions and these will surely be realized in the long run. And even people who appear to be fast asleep in bed aren’t sleeping properly. Fifteen million of us have been diagnosed as having “junk sleep” – the poor quality slumber that is apparently the result of too much work and having a bedroom filled with TVs, computers and BlackBerrys. At a recent conference on insomnia at the Wellcome Trust, … Continue reading →
a

We have heard of various issues regarding sleepwalking and sleep driving but sleep-texting? Apparently this stems from the fact that a lot of people today are going crazy over texting, the modern way of communicating with anyone with the use of any mobile phone today. Some people just cannot sit well without seeing their mobile phone beside them since anyone at any time may be texting them or perhaps on the other way around, sending messages at any moment they feel like by pushing the keypads of their phone. Normally, we would find ourselves falling asleep and sleeping alongside our phones. But while we all know that we will fall asleep, is it indeed possible to send messages unknowingly to another person while we are in our slumber state? But some sleep experts have another explanation for the sleep text messaging, particularly in those situations in which the text message is coherent. Some say the messages are written while the patient is awake, but they have amnesia for the event. “The `sleep texter’ may have actually been awake, but had not formed new memories for the event,” says Scott Fromherz, medical director of Westside Sleep Center in Tigard, Ore. “There … Continue reading →
a

“There is a `built-in’ amnesia of sleep that occurs when the brain is briefly awakened for less than three minutes,” he says.

Thus, a person might wake up in the middle of the night, text someone, go back to sleep and have no recollection of the activity the next morning.
