Sleep loss has been known to provide some issues, both physically and mentally. And today, it was learned that sleep loss is quite critical when you talk about kids with ADHD. Sleep loss was found to be a contributory factor towards their status and may eventually render a negative impact along the way. After mean nightly sleep loss of about 55 minutes for six nights, the performance of children with ADHD on a neurobehavioral test deteriorated from the subclinical range to the clinical range of inattention on four of six measures, including omission errors and reaction time. The study involved 43 children, 11 with ADHD and 32 controls. They had a mean age of about 9 years. Though it may not come as a surprise, given that sleep deprivation does have its share of controversial effects, it seems to worsen the ADHD kids. So if you have one, better have them see a sleep specialist as soon as you can. Especially if you are in your teens, a study suggest that the best ways to fight calories and the fat is to sleep regularly. This is not the first time we have heard of the link between obesity and sleep loss. It has been reported by other studies that lack of sleep may alter levels of hormones that regulate one’s appetite, but only a few tried to see the influence of sleep loss on a person’s eating habits.
Add another potential hazard if you have been losing sleep. Aside from your health, it looks like you have to deal with hair loss as well. This was bared by a hair loss clinic in Britain, the Belgravia Centre. Sleeplessness apparently affects the body’s immune function, hormone secretion, and physical and mental stamina. With this, it is apparent that the list of effects that sleep loss can only grow. Hair loss may be hereditary but can also be attributed to other factors, that of which in this case is stress and sleep loss.
It seems that sleep loss is more serious that we thought. While we all know that chronic sleep loss does affect the memory, it seems that reflex action and other brain function can severely be affected as well. A study over at the Harvard Medical School can attest to that when they put nine volunteers on a specialized sleep-wake schedule made of 33 hours of wakefulness and 10 hours of sleep. Using a series of tests, the researchers measured the subjects’ reflexes, motor skills, memory, decision making, and other brain functions. The results have yielded conclusions that may overturn commonly held misconceptions about sleep. Several weeks into the study, the subjects’ average reaction time at night had slowed from a quarter of a second to almost four seconds. This is a familiar cycle where you have to admit that once Summer sets in, parents enjoy the break as well since they avoid having to wake up early to attend to their little tykes. It is important that parents recognize that getting less sleep can affect disposition, learning ability, and recall. Parents with existing sleeping disorders need to be especially careful during this time of transition. Dr. Michael Lacey, the Medical Director of the Atlanta Sleep Medicine Clinic says, “Adding more sleep deprivation to someone with an existing sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea can throw him or her over the edge. This extra sleep loss can potentially harm mood, ability to function at work, and even negatively affect the entire family.” Parents should also remember that sleep is absolutely essential for children’s performance at school.
We all read about it so apparently, the words of specialists may be able to convince us that sleep loss actually contributes to obesity and weight gains that has been a glaring problem these days. Medical studies performed in the past few years are revealing that sleep loss can contribute to weight gain. “It interferes with our circadian rhythms and with the way we regulate our hormones,” William Kohler, medical director of the Florida Sleep Institute, says. There are two hormones that affect the appetite: Leptin and Ghrelin. Leptin communicates that “full feeling,” and when working correctly, suppresses the appetite. Ghrelin communicates the need for more food to keep energy levels up. When people do not get enough sleep, both hormones are thrown out of whack. Their Leptin goes down, making them feel less satisfied – even when they have had enough food; and their Ghrelin goes up, stimulating the appetite. “Often, I hear people say they didn’t sleep well, and they were eating just to stay awake. It may be these hormones playing a role,” James P. Krainson, medical director of the South Florida Sleep Diagnostic Center, says. Something as simple as a mattress replacement may be the answer. … Continue reading →
a

A poor-quality mattress – unsuited to the person’s body type – is guaranteed to reduce the amount and quality of sleep. This, in turn, could increase the amount of pounds on the body.

Sit ‘n Sleep, the largest mattress retailer in Southern California, is the only retailer in the region to offer a unique, sleep diagnostic center to its customers. At the center, a diagnostic machine makes more than 17,000 calculations to match sleepers with an optimal mattress type.

It is not merely being able to sleep at the right amounts but also making sure we do not oversleep since it has dire consequences affecting our human anatomy. Such has been proven by the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to which an estimated 50 to 70 billion people suffer from sleep-related problems. The National Sleep Foundation, a Washington-based organization that studies sleep and sleep disorders, sustains that adults should sleep at least seven hours a night, children ages 5 to 12 should get 9 to 11 hours, while adolescents need 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 hours. Sleep can affect us in more ways than one and apparently health is the primary standpoint that we have to look after.

Besides having trouble at work, health experts warn that chronic sleep loss is often linked with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disease, depression, cigarette smoking, and excessive drinking.

The National Sleep Foundation, a Washington-based organization that studies sleep and sleep disorders, sustains that adults should sleep at least seven hours a night, children ages 5 to 12 should get 9 to 11 hours, while adolescents need 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 hours.

The new study, based on a door-to door survey of 87,000 U.S. adults from 2004 through 2006, revealed that among adults 18 and older who slept 7 to 8 hours a night, only 18 percent were current cigarette smokers, compared to over 30 percent of adults who slept less than six hours a night.

Lack of sleep also resulted in obesity, according to the study, which found that about 33 percent of those who slept less than six hours were obese, as were 26 percent of those who got nine hours or more. Only 22 percent of those sleeping the recommended amount of time were obese.
