It was said that African-Americans who snored heavily had insomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness.
Normally staying up late and lacking sleep due to video games is common but it seems weird how one can say they have less impact. At least that is what the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine bared in a study. There is little scientific data on the effects of video games on sleep. To test the theory, researchers at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, recruited 13 males between the aged of 14 and 18 with no existing sleep problems. Those who played a relatively violent video game took only marginally longer to fall asleep than those who watched a relaxing nature documentary.
Just in case you missed it, yesterday was World Sleep Day. Sponsored by the World Association of Sleep Medicine, this event was meant to raise awareness on sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea. More than 1/3 of adults suffer from sleep disorders and much of this was addressed at this event. For the sleep-deprived, here are some 10 Commandments of Sleep Hygiene shared. They may sound simple but check them out because you may have missed some of them in your daily routine. Fix a bedtime and an awakening time. Limit daytime naps to 30-45 minutes. Avoid excessive alcohol 4 hours before bedtime and do not smoke. Avoid caffeine 6 hours before bedtime. This includes coffee, tea and many sodas, as well as chocolate. Avoid heavy, spicy, or sugary foods 4 hours before bedtime. A light snack before bed is acceptable. Exercise regularly, but not right before bed. Use comfortable bedding. Find a comfortable temperature setting for sleeping and keep the room well ventilated. Block out all distracting noise and eliminate as much light as possible. Reserve the bed for sleep and sex. Don’t use the bed as an office, workroom or recreation room. This is a familiar cycle where you have to admit that once Summer sets in, parents enjoy the break as well since they avoid having to wake up early to attend to their little tykes. It is important that parents recognize that getting less sleep can affect disposition, learning ability, and recall. Parents with existing sleeping disorders need to be especially careful during this time of transition. Dr. Michael Lacey, the Medical Director of the Atlanta Sleep Medicine Clinic says, “Adding more sleep deprivation to someone with an existing sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea can throw him or her over the edge. This extra sleep loss can potentially harm mood, ability to function at work, and even negatively affect the entire family.” Parents should also remember that sleep is absolutely essential for children’s performance at school.
Normally, window blinds and shades can help a lot in getting some sleep since they fend off the usual irritating lights our eyes have to deal with. Exposure to light can disrupt sleep, making it difficult to fall asleep or even stay asleep. Lack of sleep has been linked to obesity, diabetes, immune system dysfunction, impaired judgment, disorientation and irritability. Using blinds and shades to control light can be your first step towards achieving a good night’s sleep. “The immune system doesn’t work well if we don’t sleep,” says David P. White, McGinness professor of sleep medicine and director of the sleep disorders program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “Most think sleep serves some neurological process to maintain homeostasis in the brain.” In the bedroom, diminish all light in order to establish a nocturnal atmosphere. Any light trickling in from windows, whether it is sunlight or streetlights, should be blocked. Blackout shades over windows can offer a good solution. Many window blinds and shades come with a blackout liner option. Shades on tracks not only offer insulation, but can also provide a complete blackout solution. To wake up by natural light, blinds set with timers can be a great way … Continue reading →
a

When all else fails, parents will either ask a sleep specialist or maybe hit the bookstores and look for advice in books that specialize in sleep problems. Well just in case you are one of these worried parents, here is a good book that you can surely check out. This is a good book that can provide you advice on how to establish appropriate sleep habits for your baby and child. The book is authored by Dr. Eduard Estivil, a director of the Sleep Distrubances Clinic at the Institut Dexeus in Barcelona, Spain. He is likewise a practicing pediatrician and a specialist in sleep medicine. “Well, now think about what you have been willing to do when your child starts bawling at midnight. You stand on your head, do the hokey pokey, imitate Barney, or try to hypnotize your child by swaying the hanging lamp in front of his little face. “What is the poor kid going to think? He’ll probably want to grow up as quickly as possible so he can sue you.” (Source) Sun Sentinel a bookstores, hanging lamp, How to sleep better, parents, pediatrician, perfect night, sleep, Sleep Education, Sleep Issues, sleep medicine, SLEEP News, sleep problems
a
