Sleep Deprivation

We are all aware that sleep deprivation is a growing issue. Seeking medical help from people who have conquered such a sleep problem may be a good way to find resolutions to such a problem. While we all know the usual suspects leading to sleep deprivation, it would be best to post them once again so that people can remember the problems that are occurring when sleep deprivation sets in.
  1. Exercise regularly.
  2. Avoid caffeine after mid-day.
  3. Go to bed when you’re tired. Don’t spend time in bed worrying about falling asleep. That’s just going to stress you out more. Get up and do something relaxing in another room, and return to bed when you’re ready.
  4. Learn relaxation techniques. Focus on your breathing or imagine being in your favorite place.
  5. Maintain a routine. Changing your sleep schedule dramatically on Friday and Saturday nights can lead to tiredness the next Monday morning.
  6. Consider melatonin as the hormone is a natural sleep aid.

Sleeping Baby

For babies, the only thing important for them once they are born is to get the proper sleep so that they can start their journey in growing up towards healthy living. Babies are usually in the delicate stages of growing up, not having much preference on the higher demands of living that most of us today yearn for. However, saying that all they need is sleep and nothing else requires more detail in determining just how to give them such quality sleeping habits today.

Remember that at their state, they are more prone towards acquiring diseases and that they are in the molding stage of being certified beings immune from any diseases or harm. Sleep is something important to them and it is best to secure all means to keep it that way.

“The comforting news for parents is that we now know more than ever before about safer sleeping arrangements for babies,” says Dr. Bill Sears, a pediatric sleep expert. “Parents can give their babies as safe a sleeping environment as possible by following a few simple guidelines.”

  • Always put your baby to sleep on her back.
  • Co-sleep safely.
  • Don’t add risk to the baby’s bed. That means ensure there are no sharp edges, sheets fit snugly on the mattress and the mattress fits snugly in the bed.
  • Improve breastfeeding comfort with a Co-Sleeper Bassinet
  • Finally, parents should practice their own safe sleeping habits.

    Studying Students

    Students often find it a need to get stuck in this area of having to study at the last minute. Familiar to most of us as cramming, some students believe that putting in all the lessons and reading materials on the night before the exam would be the best way to remember all of them. But seriously, while the intent may be good, bear in mind that an overworked and stressed mind may not be able to function well on the examination itself.

    We all know of mental blocks and headaches as leading causes which can eventually become excuses for failing a course. We don’t need to cram all the time. A relaxed mind through proper sleep periods can be more effective. We just have to discipline ourselves and stock in our memory such lessons when the need arises. Understanding is one thing but forcing ourselves to remember them when memory work comes in may really work against us.

    “A student’s performance in the classroom is dictated by the amount of sleep he or she gets the night before,” says Dr. Kohler. “A teen who regularly gets enough sleep will have improved academic performance, a positive attitude towards their education, and be able to better interact socially with their peers and teachers. Students can also remember better what they learned if they get a good night’s sleep after learning the task. Sleep deprivation, on the other hand, increases the incidence of academic failure, depression and behavioral problems.”

    Sleep Drugs by Darpa Scientists

    The search for sleep remedies continues to this day and while we all know that people need to sleep, there are drugs that are still continuously trying to find sleep alternatives to back off people from coffee to make sure they retain their sanity and strength.

    However, Darpa scientists are claiming that they have found a drug to eliminate sleepiness:

    A nasal spray containing a naturally occurring brain hormone called orexin A reversed the effects of sleep deprivation in monkeys, allowing them to perform like well-rested monkeys on cognitive tests. The discovery’s first application will probably be in treatment of the severe sleep disorder narcolepsy.

    The treatment is “a totally new route for increasing arousal, and the new study shows it to be relatively benign,” said Jerome Siegel, a professor of psychiatry at UCLA and a co-author of the paper. “It reduces sleepiness without causing edginess.”

    So much for solving sleep deprivation but it is hard to imagine a person without an ounce of sleep. Drugs are know to help, but this discovery seems to need more support and tests for it to be a good discovery for sleep deprivation.

    Pillow Designs for Sleep

    So much has been said on how to sleep properly. Many have taken on the areas of beds and mattresses, sleeping positions and proper observance of sleeping hours. But there is still one area of sleep which many would never have thought would be of importance. And this area is the pillows we use to lay our heads on or simply cuddle to make us gain that longing slumber we always look for.

    Most focus on other aspects of sleeping. For most, pillows don’t have much use when sleep is being tackled. But with this excerpt, perhaps people with sleeping problems may want to check out if pillows can make a difference the next time they sleep.

    (Source) “I have back issues and neck issues,” says Jones, 46, of Selma, Calif. “I’ve gone through a gazillion pillows. The solution for me was a wedge and synthetic pillow. I put those two together, and that seems to help me the most.”

    But what works for her won’t necessarily work for you. Pillows now come in a number of shapes. You also have several other options, from the materials that fill the pillows to the fabrics that cover them. But finding the ones that will fit your sleeping habits might require some sleepless nights.

    “With pillows, there is a lot of personal testing,” says Jones, coordinator of Saint Agnes Medical Center’s Diagnostic Sleep Lab in Fresno, Calif. “What works for one person isn’t going to work for another.”
