Bigger Necks Larger Sleep Problems
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung June 13th, 2008 in Health Issues, SLEEP News, Sleep Apnea, Sleep Issues, Snoring.
As far as overall physical appearance is concerned, who would ever think that this could be traced as another key indicator towards sleep related problems such as snoring, sleep apnea and excessive sleepiness? Apparently this was proven in a study at University of Virginia where it was found that children with larger necks should have clinical evaluation to be able to determine if sleep-related issues will exist.
Age-adjusted neck size correlated with body-mass index (BMI) and weight and showed a higher correlation with AHI than did BMI, weight or tonsil size. Neck size also showed a strong inverse correlation with mean oxygen saturation and was a better predictor of mean oxygen saturation than BMI, weight or tonsil size, the study found.
“Children with bigger neck sizes for age should be queried about snoring, apnea, excessive sleepiness, and hyperactivity. Neck size should be considered in the clinical evaluation of children with a history of snoring and apnea,” study author Dr. Pearl L. Yu said in a prepared statement.

Snoring and breathing problems will normally originate from the neck and throat and seeing larger necks does seem abnormal physically and this is only one of the potential complications for health reason that has been found. For sure, there are far more other serious issues related to it such as obesity. See your doctor now and just play safe to be sure for your own sake.

Happy Marriage Brings Happy Sleep
1 Comment Published by Brian Yalung June 10th, 2008 in How to sleep better, SLEEP News, SLEEP Psychology, Sleep Issues.
One thing about sleeping soundly, your mind has to be free from psychological strains such as relationship conflicts and problems. The mental aspect in people’s lives today bring a real bearing towards identifying how peaceful a person can be. Once there are issues or misunderstanding along the way, expect one or both to be thinking of remedies or an escape button out of it all.
Marriage is a sacred thing but it is also a two-way street. To get along, couples need to leave an open communication to sort out problems. Settling the conflict before going to bed is always advised. This holds the same for sleeping perfectly without anything to hinder you from snoozing away.
“Divorced individuals tend to have more sleep problems than those who are married; however, among the married, we know very little about how differences in marital quality may be linked with sleep,” said Dr. Wendy Troxel.
“The results show that happily married women have fewer sleep problems than unhappily married women.”

Swab Tests to Determine Sleep Patterns
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung June 7th, 2008 in How to sleep better, SLEEP News, Sleep Disorders.
Apparently, many of us have our share of sleep problems and others can see it with the sleeping patterns that we follow. Most of these sleeping patterns may be abnormal in nature and the important thing is to analyze and find a way to explain why such sleep patterns turn out to be this way.
Mouth swabs have reportedly been identified as a new way to be able to determine sleep patterns. The genes are key points in the human body that can help analyze the sleep patterns we follow and through these new means, the circadian rhythm of how we sleep can be analyzed and evaluated properly.
Researchers at the Swansea University have developed the new technique of studying sleep pattern through mouth swab. This system can assist findings of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and chemotherapy effectiveness at certain times too.
This analysis identifies the genesdefine that regulate the sleep cycle. The usual sleep and wake pattern is known as circadian rhythm.
A number of genes manage the circadian rhythm and produce ribonucleic acid (RNA). The level of this acid present is indicative of how active an individual is at a given time.

When all else fails, parents will either ask a sleep specialist or maybe hit the bookstores and look for advice in books that specialize in sleep problems. Well just in case you are one of these worried parents, here is a good book that you can surely check out.
This is a good book that can provide you advice on how to establish appropriate sleep habits for your baby and child. He is likewise a practicing pediatrician and a specialist in sleep medicine.
“Well, now think about what you have been willing to do when your child starts bawling at midnight. You stand on your head, do the hokey pokey, imitate Barney, or try to hypnotize your child by swaying the hanging lamp in front of his little face.
“What is the poor kid going to think? He’ll probably want to grow up as quickly as possible so he can sue you.”

Sleep Solutions Showcased at the Big Sleep Show
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung May 20th, 2008 in SLEEP News, Sleep Cures, Sleep Events.
We all know that trade shows are normally held to provide alternative solutions to various needs and issues today. The Big Sleep Show is a first of its kind, aimed at helping the sleep deprived people we have today and perhaps show them ways of remedying their sleeping problems.
There are a lot of people who have inherited this dreaded sleeping problem and apparently most of them will be trooping down to Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. which hosts a wide array of gadgets and mattresses that can really be a big help for people who want to get the proper sleep due to them.
The show, which organizers say is one of the first of its kind, is the latest sign of a booming, multibillion-dollar industry geared toward the 70 million Americans believed to suffer from sleep problems.
Though scientists say it’s not clear whether people’s sleep has grown worse in recent years, it has by some accounts become scarcer: A survey by the federal government found that compared with 1985, more people today get by on six hours or less. The average adult needs seven to nine.
