Most people nowadays are busy trying to burn those excess calories solicited from the just concluded Holidays and while many feel that exercise and cutting down the food intake is all that it takes to do so, hold on a second. While controlling food intake and exercise may do that, do not forget the most important factor of all – SLEEP. Studies have shown that people would need 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep to truly reap the benefits of dieting. Studies have demonstrated that lack of sleep leads to an increase in the hormone ghrelin (which tells the body to eat) and a decrease in the hormone leptin (which tells your body to stop eating). Paired with a reliable bed and doing away with the vices like TV, do not overlook the value of sleeping properly. It may play a big difference when it comes to dieting and your overall health of course. Now, veterans of all ages will be able to be diagnosed and treated for various sleep issues like obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, central sleep apnea syndromes, narcolepsy, as well as sleep problems associated with traumatic brain injury. The new Sleep Center will be armed with a four-bed, state-of-the-art sleep laboratory that will provide advanced diagnostic sleep studies and therapies such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Also, the center will be conducting home sleep studies for sleep apnea testing. Having poor sleep quality is more than just feeling tired. A lack of sleep can lead to other health problems, productivity problems at work and accidents. But the overlap between sleep and psychiatric disorders is so great that researchers have long suspected both types of problems may have common biological roots. Doctors have traditionally viewed insomnia and other sleep disorders as symptoms of depression and other mental health problems. But recent studies suggest that sleep problems may raise risk for, and even contribute to, the development of some psychiatric disorders. That means treating a sleep disorder may also reduce symptoms of a mental health problem. Here are some sleep issues common today as reported by Harvard Health Publications: Depression: An estimated 65% to 90% of adults with major depression experience some kind of sleep problem. Sleep problems also increase the risk for developing depression. Bipolar disorder: During a manic episode, 70% or more of individuals experience insomnia or report less need for sleep. Studies suggest that insomnia and other sleep problems worsen before an episode of mania. Anxiety disorders: Sleep problems affect more than half of individuals with generalized anxiety disorder.
For the people in St. Louis suffering from various sleep disorders, the opening of the new SSM Center for Sleep Disorders in St. Marys should be a welcome note. Sleep problems are growing in numbers and while not all regions have the luxury of easily accessing sleep specialists in their region, local folks in St. Louis can now expect help within their grasps. The various sleep disorders today like daytime sleepiness, insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and other sleep disorders are no laughing matter. They have become serious issues to which many people are finding hard to remedy. Sleep specialists are bound to change all that and from the looks of it, this new sleep center is bound to help a lot of people combat these sleep abnormalities. Under the direction of Dr. Raman Malhotra, a neurologist, the center offers diagnosis and management of sleep disorders through clinical and laboratory evaluations of patients. Sleep studies are conducted in private bedrooms in a controlled area where brain, heart, muscle and breathing activities are monitored.
