A Pill to Solve Snoring Problems
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung April 16th, 2008 in How to sleep better, SLEEP News, Sleeping Pills.
One thing that most people hate the most is having to sleep beside their partner who may snore a lot. Aside from the irritating noise, snoring is a dangerous symptom of a possible health disorder mainly because if affects the respiratory system of humans and may attack whenever we find ourselves sleeping.
There are sleeping masks and sleeping pills that have been introduced to the people concerned and apparently there is a new pill known only as BGC20-0166 which target areas of the brain and control the muscles of a sleeper’s airway and airflow.
Proper breathing is equally important for people with sleep problems. Obstructive sleep apnea is no joke and snoring is sure to set off some problems if they are not treated properly along the way.
‘The results from this trial demonstrate the potential of this drug to decrease sleep apnoea in some patients and normalise it in others,’ Thomas Roth, an advisor to the life sciences company BTG who are researching the drug and director of the Sleep Disorders and Research Centre at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, said.
The new drug is a combination of two existing anti-snoring drugs and in limited trials has so far proved more effective than either of the two drugs used independently, or a placebo.

Game Consoles Are the Bane of Sleep
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung April 13th, 2008 in Health Issues, How to sleep better, SLEEP News, Sleep Issues.
We all know that each time a new contraption is released, kids and teens will most probably spend most of their time playing with delight and discovering the games that come with it. However, the discipline of sleeping on time takes a severe blow as most of these kids would end up playing endlessly as they would want.
Sleep problems thus originate. Sleep is needed by the human body to be able to recharge and regenerate their bodies and apparently with game consoles such as the Xbox and the Playstation 3, don’t be surprised if you have to remind your kids what time it is and even scold them since they are too glued on the game to even notice the time.
Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said: “It’s absolutely crazy for parents to let their children go to bed any time they like.
“It’s obviously going to create problems for youngsters later in life and is part of the general problem of poor discipline in homes and schools.
“Parents need to exert more authority and remove computer games from bedrooms to make sure kids have the best start in life. I’m sure teachers would be delighted.”

We often find ourselves having to stay up late due to parties, work and worries. But while we do not value them that much, does it follow that sleep disorders are not far behind?
Apparently, one of the hard problems we have to deal with today is properly. Unless you are a sleep expert, chances are you may already have a serious sleep disorder but are still in denial. Sleep problems exist today and it really does not hurt to find out if you are indeed suffering from a sleep disorder. Improper diagnosis may eventually lead you to serious problems that you think.
Just bear these things in mind:

feel irritable or sleepy during the day? have difficulty staying awake when sitting still, such as when watching television or reading? fall asleep sometimes while driving? have difficulty paying attention or concentrating at work, school, or home? perform below your potential in work, school, or sports? often get told by others that you look tired? have difficulty with your memory? react slowly? have emotional outbursts? feel like taking a nap almost every day? require caffeinated beverages to keep yourself going?

The Oscars may have been finished and not all favorite actors or actresses came home as the winner. But as a form of consolation, most of the actors didn’t go home empty-handed. Most of them were given a special sleeping mask, the GLOtoSleep masks, to help assist them in sleep disorder problems that most may be suffering from.
It is a fact that most of these celebrities has had to deal with the said sleeping problems, bulk of which were caused by the excitement of possibly winning in the 2008 Oscars. While many had sleepless nights, for the celebrities with recurring sleep problems, this gift is indeed something worthy to help get back to their normal courses of sleep.
Recipients of an ongoing good nights sleep, courtesy of the GLOtoSLEEP™ mask, were Best Actor Nominees: George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Tommy Lee Jones, and Viggo Mortensen; Best Supporting Actor Nominees: Casey Affleck, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Hal Holbrook and Tom Wilkinson; Best Supporting Actress Nominees: Cate Blanchett, Julie Christie, Laura Linney and Ellen Page and Best Actress Nominees: Ruby Dee, Saoirse Ronan and Amy Ryan. Cate Blanchett will get a ‘doubly’ good night’s rest, as she received two masks for being nominated for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Directors Julian Schnabel, Jason Reitman, Tony Gilroy and Paul Thomas Anderson, as well as host Jon Stewart, are also in for a season of restful mellowness as recipients of GLOtoSLEEP™.

Studying the Science in Sleep
0 Comments Published by Brian Yalung February 17th, 2008 in Health Issues, SLEEP News, Sleep Disorders, Sleep Education.
Most of us encounter some problems associated with sleep. While we often shrug them off and never mind them, they can develop into potential risks that can totally become serious health risks and problems if we let them get out of hand. Normally, we only pay attention to sleep disorders once they become irritating and disturbing. But the thing is sleep problems should be treated in the same way we would have any problems with our health.
To be able to understand what is truly wrong with us, such problems should be brought to the attention of the specialists. Sleep disorders are not as simple today and if we want to avoid complications in the end as far as health is concerned, it would be best to seek the advice of certified sleep specialists to diagnose them properly.
“Few are aware that sleep talking, teeth-clenching and snoring are diseases,” said Han Jin-kyu, a sleep specialist and director of the Seoul Sleep Center in Nonhyeon-dong, southern Seoul, in a recent interview with The Korea Times. “Those symptoms are directly linked to myocardial infarction, hypertension, diabetes, heart attack and even stroke.”
