However it seems that this claim is not true. A study was able to prove this, negating the belief that by breastfeeding causes less sleep. This should be a relief for babies in particular since we breastfeeding has always been known to be the best milk for babies. However, due to health (sleep concerns) issues, some mothers have fended off breastfeeding for fear that they may eventually suffer. There has been an “urban myth” that women who breastfeed get less sleep which may cause some to hesitate to do so. Caring for a newborn is challenging enough, without being sleep-deprived, and some research has even suggested poor sleep after childbirth may increase the risk of postpartum depression. Seamus Sanders, 47, had to deal with the problem for 6 years of sleepless nights. Only until 2006 when he underwent gastric bypass did was he able to finally get some decent shuteye. Health benefits will be among the topics which include proper rest and surprisingly, weight control. There are two appetite-controlling hormones which contribute to the loss of sleep. Not only are you hungry in one sleep study, the participants’ desire for high-calorie, carbohydrate-dense foods rose 45% after inadequate sleep. Another study indicates that those who sleep less than eight hours a night have a higher level of body fat. Hence if you want to battle the bulge and sleep better, this is one event you should not miss!
It is that time of the year again when many people are expected to be stressed out and incur a lot of sleepless nights. This could be because of shopping, overeating, and other things associated with the coming Holidays. To make sure that people don’t get lost and let their sleeping habits get the best of them, SleepBetter.org offers some tips for consumers for the Christmas season. Keep Your Schedule. Try to make your sleeping habits as regular as possible. Try to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. Don’t spend your day off from work in bed or you won’t feel rested the next day. Try to stay away from greasy and heavy meals since you may find yourself having a hard to sleep since you are unable to digest them properly. Go easy on drinking and the alcohol content you may consume. It will create problems during the second half of the sleep cycle, when the effects have worn off and a backlash effect occurs. Travel Smart. If you’re traveling for the holidays as a passenger, invest in a travel pillow to catch a nap, wear comfortable … Continue reading →
a

“People lose sleep either because they cannot sleep (insomnia) or because they are not setting aside enough time for sleep – both of which can happen because of work-related stress in the current economic environment,” said Dr. David White, Chief Medical Officer for Philips Home Healthcare Solutions. ”People simply need to take sleep much more seriously.”

“Sleep is not optional – it is absolutely critical to people’s health,” continued Dr. White “The consequences of not sleeping enough are well documented. People who do not get enough sleep can gain weight, are prone to diabetes, high blood pressure and even heart attacks. We are facing a serious healthcare problem if we do not take sleep more seriously.”

Sleep is still essential for being productive. Sacrificing it may lead to a significant nosedive in performance and place your overall health in jeopardy as well.

By now, the world has perhaps been informed widely about the Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and Merrill Lynch issue to which both had filed for Chapter 11 or bankruptcy due to financial problems. While many have been laid off, the impact it has is deemed worst than the September 11 attacks on the United States, making more people wonder what is in store for them as far as stability is concerned. Ordinarily this may be seen as a temporary setback but for people who need to survive, sleepless nights are pegged ahead. It may not be categorized as a serious sleep disorder for now but if the trend continues, it should not be surprising as to how this will affect people mentally that may go as far as becoming medically related. One thing that is for sure, you cannot tell people to take it easy. With an economy practically at the cliff, who knows what tomorrow would hold. That is perhaps why many cannot sleep well these days. There is no telling which company may follow the footsteps of Lehman.

Within the past year, 38 percent of Americans said they couldn’t sleep because of financial worries, 34 percent experienced the butterfly feeling in their stomachs for the same reason – while 9 percent have even broke out in cold sweats after toiling over their finances, according to the Birmingham-based bank’s Build-to-Order Free Checking Anniversary Survey.

We all know that thinking too much may eventually result into sleepless nights. At the rate that everything is going up these days, the only thing that perhaps is remaining is to see our salaries and daily pay go up. Now that is something to ponder on. But while we can wait all we want, thinking and even dreaming of when that would be, sleeping better is the least thing we can do. Another thing that contributes to the growing number of insomniacs is that more people are now trying to get a second job. There is the traditional 8 to 5 job and hence getting another one will surely penetrate our required number of sleep. So if you get a second job for income, chances are you may not be close to the usual 8 hours of sleep. With coffee to keep you awake, you may say it is a temporary setup. But once you finally get your back to normal (assuming inflation is out), your next step would be to see a specialist. Now you have to address you sleep problem and likewise get yourself sleeping back to normal. It seems all these things will never cease.
Some of them may be familiar but these are perhaps they key points why the number of sleep deprived people and insomniacs in the world today are growing. Apparently, they may sound too basic but they do have a great bearing on why sleep-deprived people are finding sleepless nights to go by. The next time you go to bed, consider these things. Sometimes it all boils down to routine. Changing some of them may eventually lead to better sleep and of course better health and living. 1. Setting a Bright Alarm Clock The looming glare of your alarm clock can be distracting when trying to sleep. The goal is to have as dark a room as possible. Block the bright numbers with a book or consider buying a small travel clock. Your cell phone alarm may also do the trick. 2. Counting Sheep When you just can’t fall asleep, it’s useless to stay in bed. If you’ve been trying to fall asleep for more than 30 minutes, the National Sleep Foundation suggests doing something mundane, like balancing a checkbook, reading or watching TV. An activity that demands marginal brainpower will lull your mind. Before you know it, you’ll be crawling … Continue reading →
a

1. Setting a Bright Alarm Clock
The looming glare of your alarm clock can be distracting when trying to sleep. The goal is to have as dark a room as possible. Block the bright numbers with a book or consider buying a small travel clock. Your cell phone alarm may also do the trick.

2. Counting Sheep
If you’ve been trying to fall asleep for more than 30 minutes, the National Sleep Foundation suggests doing something mundane, like balancing a checkbook, reading or watching TV. An activity that demands marginal brainpower will lull your mind. Before you know it, you’ll be crawling back into bed genuinely tired.

3. Exercising Late at Night
Daytime workouts will keep you invigorated for hours. That’s why you don’t want to exercise within three hours of hitting the sack. Intense physical activity raises your body temperature and pumps your energy level—both interrupt a calm transition into sleep.
